Teaching Astronomy Uader Diftealtiee. (
The editor of the Fayettevilie North t
Carolinian telle the following amusing 3
incident in hie experience: t
We were teaching an " academary " 1
down in the wire grass oonntry of South c
Georgia soon after we left college, and 1
among the u higher branches " taught i
in that "institution" were the rudi- I
roents of Astronomy, to which ad i
yanced text book we bad introduced a t
class of sand bill toys and gopb*rfr?p- t
ping girls, ranging in age from 14 to 1
20 years. A few recitations, confined i
principally to corrections of mutilated i
pronunciations, " stairs," " licavingli <
buddies," " tbe yeath," " comics." <
"planics," &c., and we raade to tlie i
u advanced class " the startling and In- 1
credible announcement that the sun ]
did Dot rise and set daily, that the revolution
of the earth on its axis made 1
night and day, <fec. There were a few <
open countenances in that gaping, wonder-stricken
class about then.
Next morning we were waited on by 1
a grave, sage looking patron of ours, i
who, with 6ome asperity of counten- <
auce and, as we imagined, contemptuous
severity of expression, thus deliv- <
ered himself: <
" We've employed yc here to lam our ]
young 'uns, haint wo?" We assented j
to the proposition.
" Well," continued he, " what's all j
this riggymarole and stronamv and
stuff about the sun not settin' and* risin', 1
and the yeath turnin' upside dow.i of 1
a night, and sich like inf\dd talk ye've i
been foolin' the skollars with ?" Now, i
thought we, for a triumph of science,
a lighting up of his benighted understanding.
Inviting him into the acadc- i
my, we proceeded to draw a diagram ]
on the black-board, for the nnrnnm nf i
illustration. " Now," said we, " the i
sun is ninety-five millions of miles from i
the earth, and?" " Stop," cried he? i%
how do you know that? "Who's been ]
thar to measure it? What surveyor's 1
ever drug his chain over that route? <
Taint so. In vain we assured him
that scientific men had demonstrated it,
philosophers proved it beyond a doubt, (
and that all the learned and eminent ]
men in the world admitted and believed
it.
44 They don't know nothing about it," <
was his dogmatic response?41 not a bit
more'n I do, and they've never ben j
any clouter to the sun than I hev. It's 1
again reason, 6ense and scripter, to say
thAt the sun don't riso and set?for
thar's a text, which, mabbe you've '
seed, if you ever red the bible, which ,
I kaint scarcely believe you ever did <
read it, sayiug 4 from the risin' of the <
sun to tho going down thereof'?and ,
see hore, young man, if you kaint tecch
the children better'n such fool talk and
\t&del nrgyment, you mout as well |
look out tor a Dooly settlement, whar j
ther ainf no churches and the folks never |
heerd of the bible." We caved, wiped
out the diagram with our left coat tail,
bowed out our indignant patron, and ,
the next morning the 44 stronomv " clas9 (
was advanced to Peter Parloy s geography,
and the sun permitted to rise
and set as usual. There's everything

'Hevcr Stop to Argue with a Lawyer."
The Marshall (Texas') Republican
lays down this maxim, aefding, a if vou <
do you're lostand " illustrating " as
follows :
We have in Marshall, as in most
towns in Texas, an ordinance forbidding ji
persons from hitching a horse to a c
shade tree within the corporate limits, g
and affixing as a penalty for its in- *
friugetnent a line of one dollar. Our
constable, who is a very diligent and v
persevering man in the discharge of ^
his official duties, has enforced this or* rt
dinaucc in a manner that has rendered *
hire a terror to offenders. Recently a ,
lawyer, whose office is on or near the i
square, and who has a beautiful shade C
tree before his door, rode up hastily I
and hitched his horse to it. Tho con
stable happened to be passing by, shortly
afterwards, and proceeded to uH- /
hitch him and take him off. The own-\

out and said :
4*lIello, Mr. B., what are you after? a
What arc you going to do with my
horse I" I
44 Why," said the constable, 44 you
have violated the city ordinance, and
must pay a ii.ie of one dollar."
44 Bless rny soul," said the lawyer,
with great emphasis, 44 that's iny tree, I
I planted it myself."
44 Can't help that," said B., 44 the law
makes no distinctions, and says nothing
about 'ownership. It embraces an
ehade trees in the town." (J
444 Pon my word. Pshaw 1 I planted
that tree, as I told you, myself, and for I
the express purpose of having a place
? to hitcn my horse, llavn't I a right
to plant a post before my door 9"
44 Of course you have," said the constable."
u Well, then sir," said the lawyer,
44 just call it a post," as I planted it tor
one, and if the ehade is any objection, J

Dg village on the Lower Mississippi"
go writes a veracious correspondent of
bis Drawer.) 44 He has been for many
rears a justice of the Peace; and, like
he ancient Dntch magistrates in the
sland of Mauhatten, he knows a thing
?r two, and knows it very strong. He
taa little regard for the opinions of the
tigher courts, for what does the Su>reme
Court know about the affairs of
lis neighbors ? Besides, the squire is
i good Methodist man, and comoe to

[t rained very hard the other night,

Squiro was among them; and when
sailed on to pray, he began : " O Lord
thou hast promised that whore there

be in the midst of them. Come, we
prav thee, and bless this bauditti 1"
The good man evidently thought
banditti was a little band, agd expressed
himself accordingly.
Getting an Invitation.?It is re
lated of a clergyman who had traveled
some distance to preach, that at the
conclusion of the morning service, he
waited for some one to invite him to
dinner. One by one, however, the
congregation departed without noticing
him. Finally, when nearly all had
gone, he walked up to an elderly gentleman,
and gravely said, "Will vou
go home and dine with me to-day,
Brother?" "Where do you live?"?
14 About twenty miles away, sir."?
" No," said the man coloring, " but you
must go with me." This, 01 course the
iniuister did cheertully.
A gentleman just returned from a
Continental tour was asked how he
liked tho ruins of Pompeii. " Not
very well," was the reply, " tliey were
jo (rightfully out of repair." This is
juppo8ed to be the sam& gentleman
who, when asked if he haa seen the
Dardinelles, replied, "Oh, yes, I dined
with him at Gibralter, and found him
axcelleut company."
* " Dick, what aro you doing there ?"
taid a gentleman to his servant, whom
iie saw loitoring about the barn.
" Catching rats, sir."
"And how many rats have you
:aught ?"
"Why, sir when I get the one I'm
itter now, and another one, it will make
two."
