A Splendid Crow-questioner.
There are anecdote* told of a certain
lawyer, who once figured in the Peoria I
Circuit Court, ana in various other
circuits up along the river. On one
occasion this gentleman was engaged ;
to deiend a case wbero the charge was
to the effect that the defendant's dog
had lacerated the plaintiff's cow. In
examining the chiet witness on the part
of the prosecution, he asked :
" Witness, was yon present when onr
dog was having being bitten that cow ?"
4<No, Bquirc," was the quick response.
" Did you saw the dog when he bitten
her ?*
MI never saw' tho dog in my life."
441 hope the jury will remember the
testimony of this witness. He nover
saw the dog in his life, in course he

at all."
The justice here suggested that he
might have " seeu " the dog, if he had
never sawed liim.
This explained the matter, and after
a while the counsel for the people understood
the differences between " sawing
a dog " and " seeing one."
The expression that lie knew of no
law in Illinois " agin a justice being a
darned fool," is undoubtedly authentic.
There are other anecdotes equally
good of the same counsel, which we
may hereafter relate, but no more at
present.?Peoria {III.) Transcript.
The Yankee and the Quaker.?
Some years ago, a young New Englandcr
found himself in tuo back part
of Pennsylvania, ashore as to the
means of living. In this strait he applied
to a wealthy Quaker in the neighborhood
for help.
"I will furnish thee with work, and
will pay thee tor it, my friend," said
the Quaker, " but it is not my custom
to give alms to one able to labor like
thee."
"Well, that's all I want," said the
Yankee, "of course I am willing to
work."
"What can thee do, friend ?"
" I will do anything to get a little
money to help me out of my difficulties."
vrr .li *i ??
- >yoii, mere is an axe. liico may
pound on the lo^ with the head of the
axe, and if thee is diligent and faithful,
I will pay thee a dollar a day."
"Agreed, I'd as soon do that as
most anything else."
And so the youth went to work and
pounded lustily with the head of the
axe upon the log.
Alter a pause ho stopped to get
breath, then ho began again.
But after half an hour ho stopped,
threw down the axe impatiently, and
walked away saying, " I'll be hanged
if I'll cut wood without seeing the chips
fly!"

here that can sing it ?" said Jcrrold.
A literary friend, who had set up a
neat barouche with a pair of grays,
drove Jcrrold out one day into the
country. As they passed through a
village, the people camo to their doors
to behold tho pretty cqnipage. u I
think they'er struck with our grays,"
remarked the charioteer. "I wonder
what they would say of our duns I"
quoth Jerrold.
At a dinner of a society connected
with the fine arts, whore a queen's
counsel happened to be present, the
Law was unexpectedly toasted, out of
complaint to him. 'lho learned gen- ,
tleman blundered out a few sentences,
stating that he did not see how the law
could be considered as one of the arts. ,
"Black!" rapped out Jerrold, like a
dart from a bow.
On a literary iriend producing a
volume of miscellanies, under the title
of " Prose and Verse," Jerrold bantered
him ubout it, as " Prose and
Worse." ,

The dawn of a bright or day has at
length arrived for the Consumptive?-the j
doctrine of the incurability of Consumption r
has now passed away. We have indubita- t
ble proofs in our possession, that Consumption,
in all its stages, can be cured: in the
first, by tubercular absorption ; in the second,
by the transformation of tubercule inio
chalky and calcareous concretions; in the
third, by cicatrices or scars. Those wedded
to the opinion of the past may assert that it
is even now incurable. Such are behind the
age. To a11 this great truth must be apparent,
viz : that medicines inhaled directly
into the lungs, whether in the form of Vapor
or Powder, must be more effectual than that
taken into the stomach. In short, the only ,
ark of refugo for the Consumptive is in Inhalation,
and such additional means, of
which the judicious Physician will avail

Inhalation, have found it toothing and effi- ?
