* Boston, Aug. 14, 1857.
m Bets**#. Pic?Ninety-nine extra
Braised angle worms Iocomoting at hightflffr
pressure speed about a garden walk of
a showery afternoon, and being perW'
petually turned back when they get at
Hp ? the edge, and compelled to cross eafch
others trail in ennmerable directions,
I would, if the ground were soft and
their very footsteps plainly visible,
draw on the garden walk aforsaid, a
tolerable accurate man of tliA ??tw r?f
' Boston. It is orookeder than nine
acres of ram's horns, and has got more
corners than a cord of cross-cut saws.
Yon see yonr friend, and call out,
"Jones, wait a minute," and you start
to see Jones, thinking lie is just across
the street.
Misguided man 1 Far distant Jones!
You climb nine hills, and turn ninety
corners betore you get within hailing
distance of Jones again 1
The streets look as if they had been
mado somewhere else, and dumped
here in a huge tanglo, and nobody had
ever taken the trouble to straighten
them out again. It looks as if some
body had been building a lot of cities
by contract, and the job hadn't come
out even, and had thrown down his
remnants of streets and odd ends of
alleys, and little snapped off bits of
lanes and avenues, and called it Boston.
If any street in town should be
cut a straight mile in any direction, it
would go through a dozen private parlors.
and fiftv-nve nnhlic. music lmlla
In fact, Boston looks as if first rate
material for an excellent city had been
melted and poured through a seivo on
a aide hill, and left to cool.
The Bostonians are vcrv proud of
their " Common," and well tliev may
bo, for it is just such a Park as von
and I, Mr. Pic, would want, if we Lad
one made to order. [
In a walk of an hour through this I
town, you will see on tke door plates <
more names that you have heard be- i
lore, than in an excursion of five times I
the length in any other city. The 1
habit )>cculiur to Itostonians when 1
away from home, of talking about 5
themselves, explains this phenomenon. 1
But there is more civility, kindness,
and attention sliown to strangers here 1
than i have experienced in any city I *
visitod. I have boeu hero two I f
days, and have cuii?Cx'il,cn^iV asked i
about eight hundred questions, to eve- 3
ry one of which I have received a ?
civil answer, and been troated as it t
T win a reanectable homo. a.id not an i
inquisitive nuisance. I have received s
lioucst chance every time I've bought
amything?1 ve met a great many little s
boys, not one of whom has set a dog
on tne, or pelted me, or told me to <
"Go in letninona!" or called me an <
" Old Buffer," or consigned me to that
place of very warm temperature with t
which boys of our own city amxiar to
be prematurely acquainted. Tnis lat- t
ter omission was a great relief, for in J
New York a man is so often told by
youngsters to " go to ? " the place unmentionable,
that he might naturally i
suppose the juveniles were all employed
by Satan to recommend his accommodations
to strangers ; or that they
owned building lots in that torid local- |
ity, and from interested motives were
anxious to encourage emigration.
The houses don't run to seed here as 1
they do in New York; few of them 1
grow to be more than four or five '
stories high. The principal production
of the city are tanaem teams, hackney '
coaches, and brown bread. The drays 1
are a curiosity, being made like the
cars, with a joint in the middle to turn
the sharp corners. A Boston dray is
al)out as long as an average Boston
street, and when used at night, it is
lighted with gas for the accommoda- 1
tion of the driver. Three or four
horses, placed tandem, drag this ponderous
machino?they are harnessed
in this manner that they may be able '
to pass each other, the streets being
exceedingly narrow.

For instance, they vrouia say iiie i*icayune
office is abont a bond red pigs
from the City Ilall, meaning that a '
hundred pigs placed in a line would '
extend that distance?in the samo way ]
a Cincinnatian would say that tho Astor
llonae is al>out twenty hogs from j
the Museum, or seventy pigs from
Stewart's. Well, guageing Boston l>3T I
Cincinnati, I would say that " Washington
" street is about four hogs wide.
"Tremont" street al>out eight or nine !
pigs, and the generality of the streets
where drays aro most in use, are no (
where more than a hog and a slioat, or }
three pigs and a cotiple of roasters in
width. This is the reason why the \
vehicles are so long and narrow", and
the horses are harnessed one before
the other.
Nobody is in a hurry in Boston, but
tl?? people go about as respectably
slow as if the city was attending its |
own funeral. <

you ask for, and are so modest about 1
suggesting jfees, that I really think j
ibat their wages are paid by the pro- 8
prietors of tlie houacs instead of the e
guests, as is the fashion in New York- ]
rhis is really very comforting. " For a
man to order roast lamb and green ]
peas, with fried pork and onions, or to ?
send for soup with a probability of ]
getting it, is a sensation at once novel \
and refreshing to an individual who ,
has ever so adjourned at a hard hotel
in Qothani. Codfish is not so preva- (

here on Sunday, did every aristocratic ,

Lager Leer is comparatively uuknown
here, and I was compelled to
submit to a short allowance of my
favorite beverage. I could find but
two kegs of it in lloston. When I
had finished those I put on.my hat
and went to Cambridge, thinking of
the German predilections of my friend <
Longfelllow, and trusting lie would
have a supply, but Hank was just out
?out of town and I did not see him. (
Mr. Pic is greatly respected here, and ,
I, as his special correspondent, should ,
have had a public reception, only there (
isn't a street hero long enough to form j
the Mayor and Common Council in a
straight line so that I could address
them properly. It was proposed to (
march tlicm past the speaker s stand, ,
and let me fuse 'em down on the run, (
but I respect fully declined. However, j

Coolness.
Sam slick tells a story about an overgrown
bulk of a Yankee boy, who was j
sent to tho wood-pile by his father, one {
cold winter evening, for a " back-log " ?
for tho kitchen fire. The youth went
out, but instead of bringing in a good -<
substantial log. only brought a thin _
littic stick?or bruii,*? as the I^cniisylvania
Germans say. Ilia father iinmediately
gave him a good whipping,
and sent him after another log. lint
the youth having his dander roused,
lett the house, went to Boston, and V
shipped on a vessel which made a

In the course Oi'fioie, the youth came

laid: v'

The old gentleman, not to he outI0110

We were reminded of this story by 1
lie following, which we find limiting ?
ibout uncreuited : ~ 1
A certain distinguished citizen of U
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who hud lilled j ti
the highest office in the State, was once 1(
in the employ ot a farmer in Western d
New York. Among other things, it 1
was his duty to 44bring in the cows." !
One evening the cows and boy 4; came ^
home missing." Some years after, the ^
tanner was passing down East Water Ci
street, Milwaukic, and saw the name t|
of his cow-boy over tlio door of one of t<
the largest warehouses in the West.? fc
lie walked in and found his hoy in the n
counting-room. lie stared a moment r
on the truant, and then broke out with, ?
" Hallo 1 lieu, have you found them 0
cows yet ?" 1
One can imagine what followed?a "
mutual recognition. It is said the old
farmer was pacified without a breach ^
of the peace.
Do as I Did.?The other morning a C(
celebrated last man from the West p
end, entered a refreshment saloon, t
where some fifteen or twenty of his ?
friends are in the habit of co.igregat- o

his usual heartiness and generosity, *

party drank, and the waggish inviter a
aid down his ftp upon Che counter, U
ind immediately retired, whispering f<
n his softest tones, 44 Do as I do, gen- t<

)ther a moment, with a most comic extression
of the face, when one, who felt
