For the Regulation of the Patrol,
BE IT ORDAINED, by tho Intondant and
.Wardens of the Town of GreenviHe,
in Counoil assembled, That every person residing
within the limits of the Town of
w Greenville, who ia or may be liable to per"
form patrol duty, according to the laws of
[ tho State of South Carolina, shall be liable
to do such patrol duty at the times and in {
tho manner herein prescribed : Provided, ne
vertheless, That any person liable as afore1
said who shall pay the lax or sum annually
fixed by th e Ordinance to Raise Supplies as
an exemption from such patrol duty, shall
bo exempt during the time for which he shall
i so pay. And any person liable as aforesaid
who shall come to reside in the Town at any
intermediate time between the annual penj
ods fixed for tho payment of the said tax,
shall pay in proportion to the time lie shall
reside, or come to reside, in town before the
next annual period for the payment of said
tax.
He it further Ordained, That it shall be !
the duty of the Cleik of Council to make

every two weeks; *nd such persons, when
called out by the Marshals, shall be subject
to the, command of the said Marshals as
captain of patrol, and shall be kept out bv
said Marshal, nnd on duty, from 0 o'clock,
P. M., till 3 o'clock, A. M., during tho winter,
and from 10 o'clock, P. M., until 2
o'clock, A. M., during the summer, at each
of which hours, respectively, the said Marshals
shall call the roll nnd mark defaulters,
either for non-attendance or for not being
equipped as the law directs; and the said
Marshals shall make return of such defaulters
to the Council at tho next regular meeting
thereof, in order that such defaulters
may be summoned to shew cause why he or
they should not be fined as the iaw directs.
He it further Ordained, That any person
who shall make default as aforesaid, without
[ a sufficient and legal excuse, shall be fined
, the sum of two dollars, nnd ten per cent, on
his general tax for tho preceding year, paid
: by him on the property owned by him in
Greenville District, for each and every default,
to be imposed by the Town Conner! of
Greenville, nnd collected by execution issued
| under the hand and seal of she Intendant,
I and directed to the Sheriff of the District,
which execution shall he in form and to the
effect of executions issued for tho collection
! of military and patrol fines by the laws of
the State. This Ordinance to tnke effect
from the first day of December, 1857.

charge eny male or female slave, to permit
such slave to hire his or her time, labor or
service, with the privilege of working in the

or having in charge a slave or slaves so
offending, shall be liable to n penalty of
twenty dollars.
