TlUivjj^tlSTS OLIO. "
Borrowing a Shirt.
* 8am ?? happened to arrive at the '
pleasant village of 8 , one mild* 1
autumn evening, and " put up" at its !
only tavern ; and as ho entered, he .
heard u music and dancing in the upper
chamber." The landlord, who '
was an old acquaintance, told him that
a dance wus going on in the hall above.
H Come, Sam, go up; there'll be fun
and good inusio." i
" Can't do it," said Sam, " haven't
the trimmings; (ho was a hatter, and J
knew the value of trimmings,) look at !
mv shu t. Twonldu't do."
* Never mind that, my friend, I can
give you a shirt of my own," and stepping
into an adjoining room, he
orought out a shirt big enough for
Daniel Lambert. Holding it up he
said :
" There, now, is a comfortable roomy
shirt for you."
<% Oh, that won't do?I should lose
myself in it entirely."
44 Well," Baid the good-natured B011- ,
iface, 141 guess, after all, I can do better
for you. One of the girls is ironing
some shirts for the boarders, and
I can get you one that will lit, any
how ; just you hold on."
He presently re-ap|>eared with a
nice shirt, of quite another pattern,
into which, having thrust himself in
an adjoining bod room, he made a
hasty toilet, and entered the ball room. <
Being young and good h>oking, he 1
found as many partners as he wanted,
and had a selection from the prettiest
girls in the room.
The other rustic beaux, and the
homely belles, didn't seem to like it
inucb. The jealous love went so far
as to say :
. 14 I'll cut the comb of that, conceited i
chap mighty quick, if ho don't mind *
his eve." J
Meanwhile Sam felt that he was the
observed of all observers, and his pride
was not a little elevated. I
Presently there came the toot! toot 1 n
of an old fashioned stage horn in the fl
i ? mi ii i I .11
distance, mo coucn intnuereu up to
tho inn ; the driver threw out the mail, t
and went into the bar-room, it being J.
liia stopping place at tho inn for the
.night. 1
"Won't 3*on go no 6tairs and join
tho dancers?" asked the landlord;
" they're having a great time up there; ^
don't \'ou hear the fiddle, and the door
a tremblin' ?" 1
In those dnya stage drivers were of
the mo9t popular cast of the community
; and our hero knowing this readity ^
consented, lie called the maid for a
clean shirt. 1
.She came in with tho answer th..t
the landlord had lent it to Sam
to dance in to-night, not knowing, or
not thinking, that the stage driver
would want to use it that night." ' 1
4t Ilcrc was a prett}* kettle of fish !"
his only clean " sark" loand to take his
place in the ball room, to which the
landlord had just invited him 1 lie
was " tearing mad," and after a few C
observations, which were rather more
nervous than elegant, ho entered the L
ball-room, his face flushed, and 1;ie>
voice somewhat hnsky with passion,
strode into the middle of the hall.
Tl. _ " _ 1 J .U ~ .1 *
? uc iiiwsiv; stup|nsu| uiiu i uc unvur
broke the ensiling silence with the sudden
question:
" Is there a man by the name of
Sam here ?"
"That's me!" said Satn, stepping
forward, evidently expecting some r
new evidence of his sudden popular)- J
ty.
44 Oh ! you are Sam , then, are J
3*on ?" 11
J e:
" Yes, and what do you want of *
me ?*' s
nt tiiw particular, only when ^
yon got thro' with that shirt of mine
that you've got on your back, and
strutin' round in, I'll just thank you to
leave it at the bar."
A loud laugh followed this, exposure;
the coxcomb was cut; his feathers
dropped; and amidst much cackling
he vanished from the u gay and
festivo scene." j.
Not Bap.?The appended negro story,
copied from a Southern correspondence
of a Boston paper, is not had :
General C gave his black
limn Sftwnnv fnndn siiul norm lotion tn
get a quarter's worth, of zoology at a
menagerie, at the same time hinting to A
him the striking affinity between the ^
Siinia and negro races. Our sable ?
friend soon found hi.nself under the
canvas, and brought to in front of a sedate
looking baboon, atid eveing the
biboquadruped closely, soliloquized
thus : " Folks, sure'a you're born ;
feet, hands, proper bad looking conn- 1
tenance, just the nigger, gertin' old, I
reckon." Then, as if seized with a
bright idea, ho extended his hand, with
a genuine Southern "how d'ye do, uncle
?" The ape clasped the negro's
hand, and slio^ it long and cordially.
Sawn#fr the?rp]ied his new acquain- T
tance with interiiogations as to his
name, nativity, And former occnpo*
tioiH, but eliciting no replies beyond
a knowing shake of the head or a mep
ry twinkling of the eye, (apo wa9 pro- *
b ably meditating the bust way of
tweaking tbe darkey1* noee,) he concluded
that the ape was bound to keep
non-committal, and looking cautiously
around chuckled out: HHe, he I you
too shanp for thom, old Ibller; keep
dark; if ye'd jist speak ono word of
English, whito man have a hoe in yer
hand in less than two niinutes."
