The swaths ot golden gmin ;
Tho merry maids tho furrow? throng,
sheaves with cheerful song,
W^h0 - "While children stoop the ears to glean,
Thai fall the maiden's hands between.
At length with day's declining,
% v Tho western sun sinks bright ;
Tho harvest moon now shining.
Floods heavon with mellow light;
* _ ' Upon the green sward merrily,
To notes of rustic minstrelsy,
Young men and maidens free from care,
> Dance in tho ovcning nir.
Now soro the loaves are growing
With many a russet streak,
Just like tho death bloom glowing
On a dying mni<lert\s cheek.
Now bleaky blows tho Autumn breeae,
And sweeps tho leaves from moaning trees,
And rain by day and frost by night
Overspread the (lowers and holds with blight,
lint though tho loaves v?ro dying,
And (lowers have lost thoir bloom?
Though blight on earth is lying,
And heaven is filled with gloom,
0, trustful heart'. Ihj of good cheer,
For timo brings round iho rolling year,
When Wintor, Spring and Summer are o'er,
The golden Autumn will teom onoe more.

In his passage to one of the

" Husband," said tho lady to tho

probable cause of this untimely alarm,
when thoy heard a rushing of feet, and

a Polite Judge
Governor Ford, of Illinois, tells an
aneedote of one of the early judges oi
that Stat t but the Governor docs not
put. upon record the name of the con.
siderate magistrate:
At the court over which this judge
presided, a man by the name of Green
J was convicted ot murder, and the judge
[ was obliged to pass sentence of death
; upon the culprit. Calling on the pris
| oner to rise, the judge said to liirn;
4 Mr. Green, the jury say that you
| are guilty of murder, and the law says
you are to be hung. I want yon and
all your friends down on Indian creek
to know that it is not I that condemn*
you ; it is the jury and the law. Mr.
vtrecn, at wnat timo, sir, would you
like to l>e liung ? The law allows you
time for preparation."
Hie prisoner replied, "May it please
your honor, I am ready at any time ;
those who kill the body have no power
to kill the soul. My preparation is
made, and you can fix the time to suit
yourself; it is all the same to me, sir."
"Mr. Green," returned ilie judge,
" it is a very 6erious matter to be hung.
It can't happen to a man but once in
his life, unless the rope should break
before his neck is broke, and yon had
better take all the time you can get.
Mr. Clerk, since it makes 110 difference
to Mr. Green when he is hung, just
look into the almanac and see whether
this day four weeks conies on Sunday."
Tho clerk looked as ho was directed,
and reported that that day four weeks
came on Thursdnv.
"Then," said the judge, "Mr. Green,
it you please you will be hung this day
four weeks, at 12 oVlock."
Tho Attorney General, James Turner,
Esq., here interposed, and said:
" May it please the court, on occasions
of this sort it is usual for courts to pro
nounce a formal sentence, to remind
the prisoner of his perilous condition,
to reprove him lor his guilt, and to
warn him against tho judgment in the
u*n?? lit fr/*
" Oh, Mr. Turncy," said the judge,
" Mr. Green understands the whole
mutter ; ho knows he has got to be
hung. You understand it, Mjr. Green,
don t 3'on ?"
"Certainly," said tho prisoner.
" Mr. Sheriff, adjourn the court."
Four weeks from that day Mr.
Green was hung, but not so much to
his own satisfaction us his appearance
promised on the day of his conviction.
