Be it further ordained, That si a res or other persons of coh>r, more than five in number, shall not be permitted (except at funerals, and on other occasions hereinafter provided for) to assemble or meet together within the limits of the town of Greenville, unless it be for the purpose of labor, undor tho charge and supervision of some white person, hoing the owner, employer or overseer of nuch slaves or free persons of eol or; and it shall be lawful for any officer of the town, or any white person, to appreliei.d any negroes or free persons of color, so assembled without tho presence of soma whito person as above provided; and for that purpose, authority is hereby given to enter into any lot, house, or other building or cnelosuro within the town of Greenville, wherein any negroes or other jiersons of eolor may be assembled contrary to the provisions of this ordinance; and every negro or person of eolor so apprehended in the day time, shall immediately bo carried before the Iutendant or any one of the wardens, who is hereby imtnoriied and required to order such corporal punishment, not exocediog one hundred lasnos, as such Intendaut or wardens may in his dis oretion deem proper; and if such negro or other person of eolor he apprehended at night, he or she shall be confined in the Guard liouso until the next morning, and then carried before the Intendant or any one of the wardens, and dealt with as abovo provided. Sec. 6. That no slave or free person of color shall ba permitted to keep a | shop or stand within tlio limits of the town of 1 Greenville, except at the market, for the sals of j any articles or commodities whatsoever, either on his or her ownaeoount, or on account of bis or her owner or guardian, or any other person, withont a written licease or permission from the Council, under a penalty of fifty lashes for each and every offence; nor shall any such slaye or free person of eolor he allowed to sell, within the sorporate lituiU of the town of Greenville, any article or commodity whatever, without the written pcrraiaeion of hu or her owner, employer or guardian, except garden vegetable*, fruit*, milk, loa cream, fish and ovate re ; and any slave or free poraon of color offending herein, ah ill be punished not axeaeding fifty lashes, aa the Counoil may direct. Stc. 8. Be it further ordained. That it ahull not be lawful for any slave or freo person of color, within the corporate limit* of the town of Greenville, to purchase any poultry, butter, eggs, venison, wild fowl, or any other article or commodity, whatever, with a view to send the same to any other market or place to be sold on profit or expectation of profit; and any slave or free person of eolor who shall offend herein, shall forfeit all the articles or commodities so purchased, end shall also be whipped not exeoeding fifty lashes on the bare back.
