The boys knew that Jo!my would do
as he said ; hence, thoy not only ceased
tormenting him, but stole- away, as if
the police were already upon the track.
When alorio, Johnny began to consider
what it was best to do. There
was no way, that he saw, by which the
owner could be indentitied by him. A
thought struck him?he could deliver
it to the office of the chief of polioo?
But he should lose the sale ot his papers
if he attended to it then, and if he
did his mother and little sister must i
go without bread that night; for they
had nothing to eat save that which the
daily sale of the newspapers brought.
What should he do i He paused '
awhile, and then said : ^Mother, yon '
had rather go hungry to night I am i
spre I would rather too, than keen the j

Thus saying, ho trudged olf, with the
purse in one hand and a large bundle
of newspapers in the other. Ho whistled
as he went; for, although pinehed !
with cold: and hunger, he felt happy |
because ho was doing good.
After disposing ot the purse, and be- j
ing called an "honest little fellow" by |
the police, he returned home, and related
to his mother how he hud acted'?
She praised him for so doing, and said
I he must do right if hoporisbed in the
^ttempt.
The next norning, Johnny went from
his home a little miter and eoldor than j
usual, for he had no supper or breakfast
to till up his stomach, thereby keeping
the cold out.
At nightfall he was going home with
a light heart., for he had sold papers
enough to buy bread enough to las! his
mother, sister and himself one day I
when he was >n%t by the gentleman to
whom he bad delivered the purse on

Paper Making.
Ptedr persons have an adequate idea
of the immense amount of capital labor
employed In the manufacture of paper.
And it is only by a recourse to figures
and statistics, that a just ' conception
of the nature and extent of the buei?w*a
can be approximated,. The rate at
which the consumption of the "article
increases has for out stripped the most
oxtravagant anticipations that could
have been entertained and has opened
the eyes of manufacture to the startling
fact that the sonreo from which they
have derived the material necessary
for the manufacture of paper, and
which tlicy had regarded as unfailing
hoa been comparatively exhausted?to
such an extent at least, as to render
them no longer able to keep peace with
the demand., Bags which at one time
' Droved a serious incumbrance to house
keepers, and were thrown out with the
; daily offal, are now becoming not only
sought after but an article esteemed almost
precious.
This state of things had been foreseen,
and the proprietors of the London
knowing the effect an advance
