Port Royal as a coaling station is a success* iST We hear that twentyj>cr cent, of the money to pay the expenses of the election of 1874, has been received by Wm. Elliott. Esq. JST" Mr. W. H. Sella Martin, a prominent col" ored politician of New Orleans was found dead in his bed on Friday morning, with a Vial of laudanum near him. E. Olilandt, took possession of the new store he has recently erected on Bay St. It is a great improvement to the Bay. Mr. J. E. Boyoe is also rapidly pushing his building to completion. Col. Mclntire of Hilton Head sent to his friends in Beaufort some of the finest watermelons we have seen this year. Many of them would weigh six hundred pounds. ? 1 < i :? J^-The population of Port Royal will fie increased in the course of a few weeks by from one to two hundred employees to be engaged at the repair shops of the railroad company, which are now com pie" ted. ? The Railroad company kitend constructing a large reservoir to supply their locomotives, and to be used ifr case of fire, and it is considered a good plau. to have it so large as to contain water sufficient to supply the citizens of this thriving locality with water for general ** I^The handsomest campaign banner in the State was throwa across Bay St., Beaufort, at the Standard & Commer- ; ct\l office. It is of net work with pictures | of the candidates and scrolls iD relief. It ! has the wordsv ''The choice of Beaufort | County.?For President, Rutherford B. j Hayes, of Ohio;?For Vice President, William A. Wheeler, of New York;? For Congress, Hon. Robt. Smalls;?For Sheriff, Wm. Wilson;?For Senator, Hon. Samuel Green." The lettering is in red, blue, broDze and black, and presents a. very attractive appearance. JSTThe agricultural report of the Department of Agriculture, Washington, | speaking of the corn crop of this county, i says:?"A rainstorm in June lasting a week, during which upwards of fifteen inches of water fell, did great injury to the crop." This rain was injurious in' some localities, on account of defective drainage, or lack of it, but generally a ' better corn crop will be made in this j oounty than there.has been for a number . of years. Speaking of sweet potatoes it j says: "the prospects were never better. I It does not give as good an account of the (?otton crop. J Last evening about dusk the gin house and engine house, at Messrs. Nichols ar- Jo., St. Helena Island, was found to be on fire. A large force was soon collected who strained every nerve $o subdue the flames; and by their efforts the store and large residence opposite the burning building were saved from destruction. The gin and engine house wer* entirely consumed and the loss cannot be less than from two to three thousand dollars. We have not learned of the origin of the fen*. *4^* As the cotton caterpillar has made its appearauce in this county, and many of our readers may be iuduced to use Paris greeu in its distraction, the following caution from an exchange is timely: There is. great danger in the mixing of Paris greeu for potato bug an i cotton w*>nn poison, owing to the fine dust which arises in the process, which isinhaled and also rapidly absorbed by the pores of the skin, especially it the person using it should be in a state of perspiratiou. T ? guard against this, the hands and face (particularly the nostrils should be pro tectedas much as possible, and should !?o carefully washed after working it, or tu any of the preparations of which it is an ingredient. As it penetrates and poisons wood?gets into the seams and crevices of J articles made of metal?and even into j earthenware that is at all porous. All; household utensils or any thing in barn j or stables (which cattle or horses could \ have access tolin which the article (nay have been mixed, or from which it has i been used, should be carefully set aside, i and never again used for any other pur I i pose. -Malignant sores arc not infrequent- j ly caused by scratching the skin when itching, or irritated, from handling the j green. It should be constantly borne in j mind that it is a more dangerous and i deadly poison than arsenic, and farmers, j planters, and others, when purchasing, I * 1 .7. ?! should bo duly cautioned ro exercise me | utmost care in using it. Cure? The free i ! use of milk as a beverage is recommended , but we have found hydrated per-oxide of j iron (a simple, harmless remedy) the best' antidote. Sores, cause by the green, should j j be well covered with it, as with an ordiI nrtrv salve, and a teaspoonful in a wine | | glass of water should be taken twice a ! day internally, whilst working with the ; I green. This remedy can be obtained ! from any druggist or chemist. 4^^ MARINE NEWS I , CLEARED.?ST. HELENA SOUND. Aug. II.?Norweigan Bk.
