The democratic county Convention met, at Yemassee on Monday last, acdelected delegates on the "stright out' j platform as follows: Messrs. Wm. EIliott, C. J. C. Hutson, J. W. Moore. J. E. Deloach, Abram Martin, G. H. Hoover, and James E. Morrison. Just received a choice lot of confee tionery at KoDert 8. I?* The board of equalization have, very properly, reduced the assessment of real estate on Port Royal, Ladies, and St Helena Islands. The unfairness of valuing lands on these island from five to ten dollars per acre, and on the main land from fifty cents to seven dollars per acre has created considerable dissatisfaction. Irish Potatoes and Codfish at ^^H Robert s. 10* On Friday last a boat, containing Hp three men named Tom Fuiler, Dick FulI ler, and Richard Jackson, together with a load of several hundred watermelons, from Poor plantation, Hilton Head, was W capsized in Calibogne Sound, and all the men drowned. 9* We have received reports from several plantations on St Helena Island, that the cotton caterpillar has put in an appearance in strong force, and as the weather has been very favorable for their development for the past few weeks, snd the cotton plant having been kept green and tender by the frequent showers grave fears are entertained of seriously damage, by these pests. &? Try a " Golden Plume 41 the Boss ten cent cigar at Robert's, From the last published report of U. S. customs, we see that Beaufort, although not a tenth part as large as < Savannah or Charleston, does not fall far below them in the value of dutiable imports received during the year. Beaufort $107,219; Savannah $169,951; Charleston 267,181. $9* Between three and four hundred j excursionists left Beaufort for Savannah on board the Steamer Reliance on Mon-! day last The Rev. R. F. Bythewood got up the excursion which was a com plete success. ^9 flU The entertainment of Sunday evening last, presi ded over by the Kev. J. B. Holmes, whose name was used by his friends on the municipal ticket without his consent, made it generally known at the polls that he did not wish the position and would resign if elected, otherwise there was no question that his name would have been added to the list of successful candidates. r I^ Judge Reed has thought it prudent to instruct the clerk of the court fo? Charleston county, to adjourn the court of Common Pleas, that he had left open, aud which Judge Whipper had announced that he intended to preside over on the 27th. inst Judge Reed is not anxious to have the matter settled so soon. B&. We are informed that since the attack on Mr. T. E. Miller, an account of which we published last week in a letter signed " Voter " that his house was surrounded a few nights afterwards by a large body of armed men who made some threats, and Mr. Miller for the safety of himself and family has removed to Grahamville. Jacksoo Wood, Alias J. P. Green was arrested in Charleston on Friday la st on suspicion that he was one of the gang who entered the store of Mr. R. Harris, at Allendale, on the 31st of last month. A large quantity of the goods stolen have been captured in Charleston. M^Judge Maher, has had tendered to i.tn? ttiA nnmin tinn on the democratic ticket for governor, bat has declined the honor. i # i , A sad accident occurred near Grahamville, on the 2nd instant It teems that two little boys, (the youngest children of Mr. Reynolds ) by some mistup, got hold of a box of concentrated potash, which is used for making soap, and after, examining with all a child's curiosity the contents, they tasted it and were most dreadfully and painfully poisoned. There is but little, if any hope ,9f th<eir reoovery, A-The fair for the benefit of the j^piaoQpal Church fund took place at flardeevilie on the evening of th" 26th ult and was in every particular a success. Quite a large excursion party attended from Savannah and numbers of youn? p^ap^e the surrounding country and villages also graced our streets, The Fair took place at the residence of Mrs. Edwards. The table literally groaned un^er the weight of good things tempt flpgiy displayed upon them. The waa hr^jts, ^de by Mrs. P., reflected greal credit uppn the taste and skill of that lady The ice cream stand was surrounded by punpjaers during the whole evening. Th< Rebecca's Well was a perfect type o neatness and fantastically arranged. Tht Wei] was presided over by the chanuiuj I Misses W. and It., in the characteifi of I ! Rebecca and Rachel. "Take a chance!' was heard on every side, and imploring faces peeped up at you irresistibly, until one's pockets were reluctantly emptied, j At 11 the whistle of the locomotive sum-1 moned the Savannah party, who returned | home, with all sorts of pleasant recollec- j tions, by the light of the moon. TOWN COUNCIL, MEETISOt Swearing in the New Council. Electien of Clerk and Treasurer. The Election Contest, Instructing a Solicitor. Last night the members of the retiring council assembled, and the finance comI mittee reported having examined the | accounts of the Intendant and the clerk ! and Treasurer and found them correct, j Mr. Waterhouse called the attention i of council to an unpaia bill of one of the j town employees, Ben Watkins, and pro. % 5 ? ? *L a fvAoonrv duced accepted oraers on mu UVOCUIJ | tor part of the bill, one of which was accepted by the former clerk and had not been.paid. He desired council to take some action. The town had paid off in full Ben Watkios for his services. The matter was left with the Intendant and the treasurer to examine and come to a settlement between the parties, council ' thinking they had no powerin the matter, i The returns of the managers of election were read, and the Intendant proceeded to induct into office the new council. Mr. F. D. J. Lawrence desired his papers that he had presented should be examined, as he appeared as legal advisor for a contestant to the seat of one of the wardens and objected to the new council being sworn in. The Intendant held that the p owers and duties of that council were at an end, and proceeded with the busi-1 ness of swearinginnew council.after which the papers presented by Mr. Lawrence were read and the Intendant held they were insufficient and Mr. Lawrence must present his evidence in writing, when the contestant would have an opportunity to submit evidence in rebutal. Mr. Lawrence contended he was right, and offered to make an argument, but was informed that he would have until the next meeting to submit testimony and then after the other side had testified he might address the council. Council then proceeded to elect officers. There were two applications for clerk and treasurer, Mr. Richmond and Mr. Lockwood, who stated m his letter, with a view to save expense he would do the work for $300. in addition to fees allowed on exc cutions. The ballot was four for Rich mond and one blank. Mr. Richmond of fered a bond signed by Messrs. Collins, and Pollitzer, which was accejted and he was sworn into office. For marshal, Joseph Cohen received three votes; Peter Gibbs one, and Peter Robinsou one. Mr. Cohen was declared elected. 1776'. IS 76. OBNTENHTTAI,. POKT ROYAL RAILROAD CO., Office Gen.
