* LOCAL ITEMS. Beaufort, S. C. 13.July, 1876. George Washington, of Hilton Head was drowned on the 5th in St., in Skull Creek. The battcaux filled by a leak caused from the starting of a plank, and deceased was drowned in attempting to reach the shore. An inquest was held by Dr Wilder on the following day. Igf Choice Lemons at Robert's. fgT John "nipe, one of the convicted murderers of Gen. Howard, has, since his trial, stated that Frederick Bright, had do hand in the murder whatever. It will be remembered that, aside from the testimony ofSnipe, rfiere was no evidence that would connect Bright with the murder. An effort is being made to induce the Governor to extend executive clemency in his favor. Bright has become utterly unnerved at the contemplation of his impending fate and completely broken down. Their execution was set for the eleventh of August. S- Augusta Watermelons at Robert's ON BOARD THE CATSKILL. A Master at-Arms Kills a Bailor. > On Friday last Deputy-Coroner, Dr. John A. Johnson, held an inquest on board the monitor Catskill, in Port Royal harbor, on the body of John A. Jordon, a seaman on board said monitor, who died that day from a bayonet thrust that he received at the hands of Henry Mouohan, a master-at-srms, on said vessel, on the 5th inst. From the evidence it appeared that deceased requested Monohan to give him a lantern with which to go into the sail room to get a matress to make boat cushions, which was refused. Deceased then went into the room without a light and soon after Monohan followed him and ordered him out, but he refused to come, and he went into the room to force him out. When they came out they commenced atussel, and Monohan drew a cutlass and struck at Jordan, who wrested the weapon from his hand and struck him twice in the face. Monohan then went to the gun rack, took ouc a musket, fixed a sword bayonet on it, and advanced on Jordon, and thrust him io the left side of the abdomen, just above the groin. Some of the witnesses deposed to heari in* Monohan exclaim, while in the sai ~ W <? 1 room, 41 you draw a knife on me, " but no knife was found in the room nor in the possession of Jordon. The jury returned a verdict of feloniously killing against Monohan, who was committed to the Beaufort jail on Friday evening. The body of Jordon was buried at the National Cemetery the same evening.
