The Rice Interest.
The delegates who went to Washingtonjfcin
this State, and there met delegof!Ks
from Georgia and Louisiaua, and \
co-operated with them in an effort to
prevent the passage of the Hawaiian
' bill, admitting rice and sugar from those
islands into the United State free of duty,
have returned.
The bill had been referred to the committee
on foreign relations, and the delecation
were admitted to a hearing before
it. The bill is still in their hands ami
will not be reported for some time. The
congressional representatives from the
States mentioned arc reported to be laboring
earnestly for its defeat.
The passage of this bill would ruin the
rice interest in this State and should not
be tolerated for one moment. The South
must be protected in the production of
her staple commodities.

B6LA.n anonymous correspondent writes
to ask 4'who assisted French, or how he
became a grand juror?"' As we never
notice correspondents without they furnish
their name, we cannot answer.
Neither Governor nor Lieut. Gov.
in the State at present. If the irresistible
came in contact with irremovable just
now, what would be the consequence?"
The constitution is silent on this point.
BgL. A rule has been served on F. D.
J. Lawrence, to shew cause on Friday
next, why his name should not be stricken
from the roll as an attorney, for unprofessional
conduct.
Dr. White has applied for admission
to the bar, and will be examiued
on Friday. Physic and law may work
well together, and very bitter physic, some
people find law to be.
Twenty-four days services wa>

The charges took as long to

Say* Mrs. Hohcack has removed her
bakery from the Stevens House, to the

ftS?" il Hnld the fourth for I am eoiir

sang, as they climbed the stairs to the coui ^

With a slight intermission on
Tuesday, it has rained all this week in
torrents, and not less than ten to twelve
inches of water can have fallen. Crop?
were suffering from drought before the
rain, but now there is danger that they
will be drowned out.
Bg&u The house of Dr. Stuart, so recently
partially destroyed by fire, in
Beaufort is almost repaired and ready for
occupancy. Mr. W. H. Devlin had the

The schooner yacht " Jennie "

full of rain water and fouling with
another boat sank her. Her top-mast
is just above water.
