On Saturday night last, Gen. John II.
Howard left Grahamville for his Whitehall
plantation, and arrived at Honey Hill
soon after dark, when he was shot by parties
lyiug concealed. lie received a wound
in the baek part of his head, which must
have caus:d almost instantaneous death.
He either fell from his buggy or was
dragged therefrom by his murderers.
His horse continued on with the buggy
and stopped in the yard at the Whitehall i
place, when those who went out to it were '
startled at fiuding no one in the buggy
which was bespattered with blood. An
alarm was given and a search made along
the road which resulted in fiuding the
body a short distance from where he is
supposed to have been shot. Near the
place the ground was much trampled as
if patties had waited some time for their
victim. An inquest was held on Sunday
two witnesses, Fred Bright and John
Snipe made such a statement, charging

in the lining of his hat; that he had
intrusted this money to one of the prisoners

A remarkable case was tried before
Trial Justice Carieton, on Monday last.
Joseph Singleton, Archie Simmons, Ben
Wallace, and Henry Sweet, were charged
with committing a robbery with violence

a few days before, flush with money.
They wished to get to Savannah and the
prisoners promised to pilot them to Beaufort
where they informed theui that they
could take a steamer to that city. On their
way, when in the woods, the prisoners j
took hold ofFederick, and Williams and!
took the money and a rosary from them, j
At the trial another actor appeared upon
