Wright on presentation of the certificates of purchase. 19" The services in the Epi-copal Church, Beautort, on Easter Sunday were of an impressive character. Tbc chancel was most beautifully decorated with flow ere, and the church festooned with run- j ning vines. > BQ^The office of the County Treasurer will again open for the receipt of taxewith the 20 per cent, penalty, on and after Monday the 24th inst. The County Auditor iuforms as that the report of an extension less the penally is untrue, and that there will be no further cxtonsion. Return visitors from Florida who take the steamer at Port Royal, have an opportunity to run up to Beaufort, which \ numbers of^^tu embrace. It is quite of j common occurrence to hear the expression ' "that they had not visited a more beauti ful platv, in all their wanderings in the Sunny South." v Capt. Jameson, of the schr. Jameson, is highly pleased with the port of Beaufort, and says he has never met with such dispatch, as he has here. E. church, Beaufort, V presided over by the Rev. J. B. Middlef ton. The programme was extensive and varied, consisting of singing, recitations, addresses Ac. The addresses were by Messrs. S. K. Taylor and Paul P. Watson. Mr. M right gave the young man twenty dollars to pay his passage to New York, and allowed him to go at liberty. Murder near tirahaniville. On Saturday night last, Gen. John II. Howard left Grahamville for his Whitehall plantation, and arrived at Honey Hill soon after dark, when he was shot by parties lyiug concealed. lie received a wound in the baek part of his head, which must have caus:d almost instantaneous death. He either fell from his buggy or was dragged therefrom by his murderers. His horse continued on with the buggy and stopped in the yard at the Whitehall i place, when those who went out to it were ' startled at fiuding no one in the buggy which was bespattered with blood. An alarm was given and a search made along the road which resulted in fiuding the body a short distance from where he is supposed to have been shot. Near the place the ground was much trampled as if patties had waited some time for their victim. An inquest was held on Sunday two witnesses, Fred Bright and John Snipe made such a statement, charging i -.t m. .i_ , when he was searched he hat! thirty dollars in the lining of his hat; that he had intrusted this money to one of the prisoners in the jail for safe keeping. On going to the jail it was found that this thirty dollars had been divided lip amongst the other prisoners in the jail. Mr. Howard was a quiet gentleman, uuiversally respected in the neighborhood in which he resided,. and no object for this foul deed can be assigned unless it was for plunder. He was seventy-six years of age. Some time ago his dwelling house on the Whitehall place was burned by a supposed incendiary. A Strange Cose. Robbers Robbed. Birision of the Spoils in Jail. A remarkable case was tried before Trial Justice Carieton, on Monday last. Joseph Singleton, Archie Simmons, Ben Wallace, and Henry Sweet, were charged with committing a robbery with violence on the persons of John Anderson Fedrick, and Robert Williams. The parties concerned were all youths, the latter two having oome from Augusta to Port Royal a few days before, flush with money. They wished to get to Savannah and the prisoners promised to pilot them to Beaufort where they informed theui that they could take a steamer to that city. On their way, when in the woods, the prisoners j took hold ofFederick, and Williams and! took the money and a rosary from them, j At the trial another actor appeared upon the scene, and from his statement it appeared that Federiek had been a waiting I o.. o i o e of the Catholic priesrs at Augusta and had robbed him of $197 and left fo: Port Royal.
