Beaufort, S. C., February 24. 1876.
ftaf* We are glad to learn that Dr. F.
E. Wilder, late treasurer of this county,
is in a fair wa^U get his settlement with
the State sati^rctory to both parties.
ot one half the taxes in this I
county have been collected. The penalty
will attach March 7, 1H76.
B?5u. The fleet fired a salute at twelve
o'clock, m., on Tuesday lu<t in eouimemj
oration of the anniversary of Washing|
ton's birthday. A centennial salute.
Afr rj??n Holmes has been ap-,
pointed an agent of the South Carolina I
' Land & Improvement Co., to receive subscriptions
to the capita! stock of said
company. He has opened books for^his
purpose at the office of the county treasurer
at the court house, Beautort.
The Governor has appointed Representative
T. E. Miller, a notary public,
and has removed Mr. T. W. Bracey
as trial justice.
&3T* We are informed that Commodore
Sehubetr, U. S. navy, is about to
make a personal inspection of the Georgia
coal, in order to asc rtain its fitness '
for use by the fleet at Port Royal.
RgU The Southern Herald says that
the collecting the navy at Port Royal,
will give general satisfaction, as 44 there
is no place so good as that for our navy.
Let it be established alror naval headquarters
for the future. We visited that
port three years ago, when the new railroad
was completed, and were then able
to port-ay itsiuture. "
There are fifteen cotton factories
now in successful operation in this State.
This is as it should be. Bring the factories
to the raw material and not carry
the raw material thousands of miles to
Co rtf Aripc
IUU lavi v* ?v ?
6QT And now our devil is happy.
I There is about to be opened a free lunch
[ saloon on Cay St.
A new fire engine company has
been formed in Beaufort, to be known as
the ''Phoenix." They will use the old
Washington hnnd engine. Hip! ip! and
a tiger for th* "Phoenix."
8^ There is at least one honest man
in Beaufort county, and stransre to . ay he
i< a trial justice's constable. He was over
paid seventy-five cents bv the county
commissioners, but when he discovered
the erior, he at once refunded it.
flfcsy The entertainment given by the
Lyceum, on Thursday last, although interesting
was not up to the ma:k of ex1^^
cel'ence of prcvions performances. The'
programme included two farces " Sent to
the Tower. " and the Two Buzzards, "
and a sketch. " The Skiduiore Guards"
in which Mr. John C anccy. and " Ser
gcant Primrose " were the leading stars.
We understand that Robertson's corned}*
"Caste" will be the next piece our
amateurs will place on the boards.
On Monday the lT. S. 8. Ossipee
got up stesr^^dropped down to the
lower anchfjj^^^rround, and she together
with the " Monongahela " and the
"Swatara," sailed on Wednesday
for Pen<a?o'a to bring to Port Koyal j
three monitors. They are expected to
be gone two weeks.
C&- Oo Sunday last the schooner
"Albert Thomas" arrived for a load of
the phosphate rock at the wharf of the
River, Marine, Mining and Manufacturing
Co., Beaufort The Frcnch-man lower
down the Bay, we suppose, will jerk
another quill from his "fretful porcupine"
with which to write of the phosphate
organ. But you know :
Then? is a burly French-man,
And he would hare the bluet,
If he did not own an organ, ^
To tell hit side the newt,
To talk about the phosphate,
And what he calls the steals; !
But then, you see, we let him prate
As we know just how he feels.
Dr. F. E. Wilder, has been appointed
trial justice on Hilton Head Island,
vice Mr. C. W. Brown, removed.
BgL. A constable last week took out a
writ of mandamus against the County
Commissioners, to compel them to shew
cause why they did not pay his little bill.
The writ was discharged but the constable
is not satisfied. He wants his bill
-discharged too. It was held that constables
may be required to exhibit to the
I commissioners the o.iginal papers in each
case, properly certified to, be lore their
claims be allowed by the board.

whom we mentioned as having deserted

to one of the watch-officer, has,
through the instrumentality of Mr. C. C.
