t 7jLoa\TTr n.! s ~ Beaufort, S. C., December, 23 , 1875. Mr. N. B. Myers, arrived in town 'tst* 96F Messrs. Dick & Small are i-cjxainting their water boat Agnes. Thirteen-fiftcenths of a mill is a ery convenient fraction for our county auditors to wrestle with. S- Our thanks are due to Congressman Smalls for a copy of the Congrcssion- I el Record. i o ? A bill has again been introduced : io Congress to refund the tax on cotton, i ? ^ r.n?, ifiAii collected by the Luitea oiait^ uvm to 1868. 19* We have not heard of any steps , being taken in Congress, looking towards J the utilization of Port Koyal as a naval j station. BQu Governor Chamberlain was absent i from Co'unibia during the election of Judges on Thursday last. He had gone j to Greenville to address the law school. j 19* We hear that a young lawyer of j Beaufort, intends addressing a Sunday j sehool at Christmas. Strange as it may j Mem, he will coudemn the practice of . 19" Friday, Saturday, and Sunday j nights heavy killing frosts were expo- | rienced in this section, but the weather ; has moderated considerably, probably preparing for our usual dose of wet Christmas weather. 19" If you find & red cross attached to your name on your paper, it signifies that you have been notified of the date of the expiration of your subscription, which we should like to have you forward to us as early as possible. 19* The town authorities of Beaufort are making raised sidewalks along a majority of the streets, by throwing up the earth from the gutters. It will not be of nueh benefit in wet weather unless they intend to cover heavily with shells.' 1 he oouincru iUusitm wuiaiui for December published by Messrs Dudden and Bates, has come to hand. Its typography is fi st class, and is a great credit to Mr. David Christian, a young nan, who sustains the reputation of the craft by superior workmanship that would be a credit to an older head. WQF Last week Messrs. Fitzv.umionx and Snowdcn, engineers of the dredge beleaging to the Coosa w Mining com pa Bjr, dug nine lighter loads of rock about 750 tons. This is the largest%unount oi rock ever raised by one dredge in a week, and does not look as if the phosphate hwds in this county were giving out. ~ ** ' i -i *1? T.. J..?. tQT* Un Monday evening insi un-*/iuj?i--> d?i' Hon. W. J. Whipper and l\ L. Wiggin Esq. were serenaded by the Union No. 1 band, at the residence of Postmaster Esekicl. After entertaining thejr guests the judges acknowledged the ^Byjiuent paid theui and expressed the 10P0iat their actions when called to their new sphere of duty would be such as even to call forth enconiutus f:oui the s. whn were heapiug uj>on them abuso in consequence of their election. m~ Our town Marshal is a very humane man. He policed on our streets last week a man driving some oxen, encouraging them to move a little faster by prodding them with a .stick with a sharp steel spike on the end of it. The Marshal told him it was "cruelty to animals" but the man was of an opposite opinion, and to prove his point drove the spike into the Marshals legs. This was carrying his point a little too far, and had the effect of encouraging the Marshal to AMT6 a little faster with his prisoner to the guard house. t^Magnolia Lodge No. 00. I. 0. G. T., celebrated its first anniversary last week. It is now in a flourishing condition. The following officers were installed by A. Ashley Chrietzburg, Ii. D.S. I). Gilbert, W. C.
