LOCAL ITEMS. I k , ^ , tr Beaufort, 8.'0., December, 16, 1875. 19" Our roller boy astonished us this week by informing us that he could not j work any more as he was going "to study ! to go to Columbia." He has high aims I in life, but probably if he gives up work j he may go to Columbia by Wilson's ex-1 press to the Hotel dc Congaree. I 9&T The Goveruori^^y^tified the trial justices on the cos^^^^^licy must not interfere between masters and seamen of foreign vessels, except in cases where 1 actual violence is charged. All questions I of dispute about weges, come under the j jurisdiction of the consul of the country to which the vessel may belong. ? ^ Fn'dnv nicht last witnessed the funeral of the Beaufort Reading Room Association. The ceremonies were of an imposing character, the benediction being expressed by "once, twice, third aod last time, and sold," as the books, tables, chairs and pictures were knocked down to the highest bidder by Mr. Jas. M. Crofut, the auctioneer. The proceeds of the i sale amounted to $90. This institution has had a languishing existence for some time, and was somewhat in debt which the amount realized will cover. The ex#scutive committee complain that a large quantity of the books that were purchased by the "Memphis relief fund" have either not been returned by the members or have been stolen by other parties. One feature of this institution was a cabinet of phosphate specimens, and a contribution box, both of which have been brok< n open. A large quantity of valuab'e phosphate specimens have been removed. There are those who say that there was something in the contribution box, but that would be rather rough on the people of Beaufort, and so in charity we would rather believe that nothing had ever been contributed. But the iistitutiou is a thing of the past, designed for a noble object, but had evidently outlived its usefulness. Gone to meet its brother?the Beaufort club. Ife. Hilton Head always carries off " the palm for early vegetables. A gentleman informed us of a dinner party down there last week where the seasonable delicacies of new Irish potatoes, fresh tomatoes and green peas were discursed. R. C. Mclathe Esq. is ahead as usual in uch matters and has sent us some gneon peas. Now gneen peas in the middle of De cember certawHy *hows what can be accomplished ia early vegetables on the Sea Islands. PREI'AOb FOR WINTER.
