Wright was re-elected to tbe Supie ne bemji. W.J. Whippcr for the first circuit and P. L. Wiggiir, lor j the second circuit. The Treasnryship. The qtiOMion was settled on Friday last in executive session of the Senate. The charges and the answer thereto were considered, and by a vote of twenty-one to ten, the Senate refused to confirm the appointment of Mr. N. II. Myers, sothai Mr. Geo. Holmes will again take posses sion of the office. The supply biil as passed l y the House of Representatives on Saturday 'ast levies for State purposes nine and a half mills, being one third of a mill less than the lowest estimate made by Gov. Chamberfain in his veto messaxre. They have also passed the claim bills known as the little k and big bonanza bills. The little bonan xa provides for a levy of thirteeu f.f teenths of a mill for three years, and the big bonanza which piovidesfor the .liquidation of outstanding pay certificates, levies one half a mill for four years. In this county by the supply till four mills are levied for county purposes, one mill of which Is to be devoted exclusively for deficiencies for the fiscal year commencing November 1st. J873. Thtse levies to gether with the two mills lor past indebtedness prior to November 1st. 1872, will maketi total taxatiou in addition to local school and municipal taxes of sixteen and thirteen fifteenths of a mill. The House in reducing the levy within A. _ _ _ 1 _ 1_ __ iL _ / I ? 1 Hie estimate rnawe uy tne uovuruor nave recognized the wiil of the people, who-e epresentatives they are, and to them a* Hell as to the Governor for the manly stand he took iu behalf of the iutcre*ts >1 the people and low taxation, should be accorded credit for theiructirn. But the work has yet only been ha'f accomplished, a no it is within the power of our legislator* by a false step in their action on the appropriation bill, to undo the good tiny have accomplished in the supply bill. The appropriations rnu-t be brought within the amount calculated to be raised orthe basis of that bill, or the future by increased taxation for deficiencies will te made to pay for the luxury of a light levy this year. Will they have the nerve and will to keep the appropriation within tinlevy ? Judging by the past they will not. hut by the spirit of the new departuie they may, and if the approval of the people. the well done of their constituents can have any influence on their actions, they will. The Senate appears to be anxious, not to increase the levy, but to make some alteration in the distribution of the amounts, and proposes to reduce the levy for public schools, and to reimburse the , school fund by tbj balance from the phos phate royalty. The school fund above al! other* is looked upon by the public with a jealous eye. and nothing should Ik -done thr?t will reduce its aggregate { amount. This State tax of two mil's lias been found insufficient to properly support tho schools, hence the necessity lor local taxation. If this proposed reduction is accomplished the balance from the phosphate royalty should have such safe guards thiown around it by Icgishvion in order that the interest of the public schools should in in wise be affected to its detriment <> We read this week the experience of a Georgian in planting Irish potatoes in moss, by which he not only made a large crop but cured the moss so that after a thorough washing and drying it was ready for manufacture into impresses. Mr. James. M. C'rofut, last spring also tried this plan with success. The Span- j >*h moss is very plentiful on the Island^ an 1 the profits on a crop of potaP cs planted in this way are about one third more than when planted in the ordinary way. Select good ground, and after breaking it up thoroughly make trenches < three feet apart tilling them with green moss. Put in your sots and cover with a layer of moss, then earth up in the usual waj\ When matured the potato*-.* ^ turn out clean us if they hud been washed and the moisture in the moss prevent' liem being affocte by drouth. i# ?hrriff'$ #aUs. tJuUMl- '6 SALJ C.J.
