The Mesmerism of Machinery.?A Hirmiugham (England.) paper describes 1 lio following remarkable easOj. which is stated to liavo taken place in one of the largo iron manufactories in that place : J u Ono of llic most singular instances in conncction with material things exists in the case of a young man, who, not veiy lorg ago, visited ono of our large ir?>n manufactories, lie stood opposite a large hammer, and watehed with great interest its perfect, regular strokes. At first it was heating immense lumps of crimson metal into thick sheets, hut the supply becoming exhausted, at Icughth .it only descended on the polished anvil. Still the young man crazed intentlv mi its million ilu.n f?l . j ? ; 1 ; ,,v lowed its stroke with a corresponding motion of his head ; then his left arm moved to the same time ; and finally, he deliberately placed his fist upon the anvil, and in an instant it was smitten to a jelly. The only explanation lie could atlord was, that lie felt ail impulse to do it, that he knew lie should he disabled, that he saw all the consequences in a misty kind of manner, but that ho still felt the power within above *cnso and reason?a morbid impulse, in fact, to whicu he succumbed, and by which he lost a good hand." This story may be true; as wonderful events as this have occurred before.? It certainly has a 15aion Munchausen look ** about it, but we presume all have at times felt more or less of a similar temptation to thrust the hand into shears, gearing, or the iilco.?fit* Auj/>v*/vi>j f v Commercial.
