anywhere. Where there is a cold, chilling
restraint felt among the members of a
household) there can novcr ho that warmth
and tenderness of feeling which is found in
a family group where nil endeavor to please
and bo pleased. It does one's sold good to
enter such a homo and see and feel the inflisneu
of the pleasurable feelings elicited
by those little words of kindness, small m
themselves, but exerting a mighty influence
over those happy children. Nor does it
stop hero; it U engraven too deep on their
memories to be ever effaced ; and as they
pass through tho world, they throw around
a mild, sweet influence, painfully apparant
to the ill tempered and unkind-member of
a discontented family.
Tlio causo of much of this discontent
ment and unlwippiucs3 arises from the negIctct
of parents and guardians to furnish
suitable means for the diversion and instruction
of their children. Books, magazines
and newspapers of a healthful character
fihould ho introduced and read in every
household. While the members are pursuing
their accustomed employments at
evening, much good might be done by one
of them taking a book or paper and reading
aloud. By these means nil will have
an opportunity to hear, and in a short time
will gain much practical knowledge and
useful information in this way alone. And
I bclievo it is maintained by all, that when
tbo children of a family have access to
proper books, tlioy soon acquire a taste for
reading or study in preference to idle sports
and viciouB practices. Let all, then, endeavor
to make home attractive ; to make
it tho centre of kind feelings and heartfelt
affection. !
