Hon. William Henry Hunt, American
Minister to llustda, ami CK-Secretary of
tho Navy, who died at St. Petersburg
Wednesday, Feb. 27th, was born at
Charleston, 8. C.. In 1824, the youngest
of live sous or an Influential lawyer and
member of tho State legislature.
Mr. Hunt was brought up In New Or
leans, to which city his fattier removed
on ncoount of tho Calhoun nullification
excitement, but attended school at New
Haven, Conn., and afterwurds entered
Yale College. He studied law with an
elder bfttther and was admitted 'to the
bur In 1844 in New Orleans at the age of
twenty, lie soon took a high rank as a
profound and eloquent lawyer, and was
for a time a professor In a New Orleans
Law Si hool. When the war came on he
refused to join In the secession move
ment, and was a Union man. When
Admiral Ftirragut entered New Orleans,
Judge Hunt Invited the officers of the
Navy to Ills house. He was elected At
torney-General of Louisiana on tho !
Packard ticket in 1870. In 1878 he was
appointed a Judge of the United Stales
Court of Claims. President Garfield
took him Into his Cabinet, and when
President Arthur succeeded to the ex
ecutive office lie appointed him Minister
to Russia.
In this capacity Mr. Hunt performed
, an admirable service to his country In
looking affri the wnrvjrors of the Jtan
neiic Expedition, and assisting them in
making their way from a remote corner
of the Russian Empire to St. Petersburg,
and thence' to their homes. Through
his efforts the good offices of the Russian
government were secured In bringing
theTTinains of DeLotig and those who
perished with him from the Western
? oast of Siberia to the Riifslao capital.
?fudge Hunt was four times married.
His Arst wife was a daughter of Commo
dore Itidglcy. . ills second wife was u
daughter-in-law of the late Hlsiiop Hop
kins, of Connecticut. He leaves a wid
ow, ouu daughter and four sous.

The degree of Doctor of Medicine has
been conferred upon Mr. Simon Beck
ham, jr., hy the S. f\ Medical College.
For the present he will assist his father,

Sheriff J. P. Hunter has conveyed to
the Penitentiary the prisoners sentenced
at the recent term of court. Manuel
Williams, 3 years (or house-breaking,
and Robert Massey, Moses Wltherspoon
and Josheph Reld, each one year tor lar
ceny of grain from the Held. They are*
young, stout, able bodied negroes and
will make splendid laborers in the phos
phate works.
The ladles of Lancaster are making
arrangements to give an entertainment
at an early day tor the purpose of raising
funds for the Sims monument.
W. B. Dunlap, Treasurer of Lancaster
County, has made bis sett lenient with M e
Comptroller General. The total Statu
tax charged is $8,930.58; collected and
paid Into the St.ite treasury $8,817. 02 ;
nulla bona 138.11 *, delinquencies $16 07 ;
uncollected executions $'28. 77. The
county collections were very close. Lan
caster is out of debt and has it* her treas
ury for county purposes $1,747.18; for
school purposes $1,088.50.
Jacob C. Clyburn, colored, who was
a candidate for the Legislature in Lan
caster county four years ago on the
Grcouback ticket, boarded tho train at
Lancaster on Friday morning for Ar
kansas. Ttye day previous lie had given
h mortgage on a mule nr.d a lien on crop
to a uieronnnt and obtained merchandise
to the amount of about $25 on these se
curities. He wrs arrested at Chester nnd
taken back to Lancaster, when he was
released after settling his account.

Sumter Griggs, colored, of Sumter
county, was convicted of bnrglarv in
February, 1870, Judge A. P. A Id rich
presiding, and sentenced to the penlteii'
tlary for life. The Governor commuted
his sentenco to five years* imprisonment,
which time expired. last week, and the
prisoner was discharged.
