BUYl&ti ON CKED1T.
We 11 ml Id an exchange (the nmno of
which we do hot now recall) a capital
article on the subject of buying on credr
It, which we think may do some good
by reproducing here. It Is upoh a fub
jeut Of no little Interest to every one.
The man who goes in debt without
haying a reasonable certainty of being
able to uieet his payments when due
tjoepa wrong not only to bis creditor,
but to p)ins?lff his family and to the com
munity. There Is a degree of uncertain
ty in all hupwii transactions, and It Is
altogether too common for men to be
come too ovvrsnngirlue, and Involve
themselves in debt In the hope of mak
ing lucky hits and |n anticipation of for
tunate conttngcnclcb, which aro of rare
occurrence.
Credit Jp almost dearly bought, oven
where ?10 security in Ample. Interest
Is a consuming Arc tlmt burns day ami
night, mill the percentage Is always in
creased in proportion to the risks the
creditor takes, and In this those who
v. ill pay aro expected to coYor the losses
occasioned by those who do not.
A farmer enlarges his operations be
yond his means. Stock and supplies are
bought on a credit; money is borrowed
to pay current expenses, and he may do
well for o year or two. This tompts him
to greater risks. In bucIi cases it Is only
a question of time when the soasons will
be unfavorable, crops short, and every
thing ho has will bo forced on the mar
ket when there Is lltt]# or no demand,
and ho Is ruined. , The same is true in
regard to tlio merman t. lie buys large
ly on a credit or with borrowed monoy.
lie Im anxious po ?ell, and Is tempted to
take great risks by tlio high prices ob
tainable. Crops are short, his -tJollec
tloiis fail, and ^I'lU^Ing over his troubles
from yoar to year only postpones and In
tensifies his distress.
"Misfortune, like a creditor severe,
rises in demand for her delay" ? nothing
can be fnore true. '/Borrowing dulls
tho edgo ol husbandry," and buying on
a credit Is the most extravagant kind of
borrowing. There Is but one absolutely
safe ru)e to insure suocess? let evory one
pay as he goes, and he will be not only
sure to live within his Incomo, but It
w}ll not be long before a basis for a per
manent prosperity will be laid that will
provo a blessing through life.
COPYRIGHT OF NEWS.
We obtervo that Mr. Watterson, editor
of the Louisville Courier- Journal unci
member of Congress, has prepared a bill
Whloh he will preseut Rt an early day,
providing for the copy-right of news
matter.
Mr. Watterson clulms that news mat
ter, the product of skillea labor and ob
tained frequently nt grout coat and out
lay, te as much property ns a printing
press or n pusto pot. We fully agree
with him, and claim with him that the
enterprise and cost of obtaining news or
other newspaper matter should be pro
tected from the pj rates who prey upon
their more enterprising contemporaries.
Here at the 8outh, we do not know so
much of ayeh piraoy ; but, we bellove
that It le largely engaged In tn the large
cities In the North and West, and wo
think a olievk should be put to It If pos
sible.
Mr. Wattorson's bill proposes to pro
tect 'f^pws" from pirated use and con
eurjWt publlcatipn for twenty-four
hours. W6 cannot soe In what manner
the aim above suggested can be aohelved.
For instanoo, a morning npwspaper pub-N
llsltes an article specially prepared for
tU columns. A cotompbrary, published
say at 10 a. m, reproduces in different
phrases, the subject matter being ob
tained from a paper on the market for
jty'ubllo use, the gist of what Us earlier
contemporary might claim to bp "proper
ty protected for twenty-four hours."
We bannot see Wherein the latter pnper
would beat all liable to censure.
Mr. Wattorsoft will likely have some
hard fighting to obtain the end he alms
tor in this respeot; not that he 1? not
right, Naut that his plan wil| likely prove
Impracticable.

THE BANVIM.R INVESTIGATION.
'The Sonate committee appointed to In

ooourrod at Danville, Va., last Fall, is
now At work tAklng testimony. The
present Investigation dona not promise
to pen out as well as hoped for by Ma

is Already voluminous, And there is no
soMNlty of people who are willing to ap

se* being paid by tip Senate. 8o far
there is nothing in the testimony to war
rant the faintest suspicion that the riots
wero prcoonoelved ou either side. The
truth of the whole matter is that the ne

pitch of political excitement, brought
about by the Keadjusters, that the flght

OPINIONS OF THE PBESS.
Compensation for Privation*.
lAnderson Intelligencer.]
The flnnnolal distress of 18/3 contributed
vory fargely to the popular vote recelvod by
the National Domocratlo candidates in 1878.
If t bo hard year of J888?4 will perforin the
sanio service for our candidates In 1881, we
will have a very considerable oomponsatlou
for our privations. Tho responsibility for
financial distress Is often laid to tho charge
