The A'?i ct and Courier, afew days ago,
contained a long account dfthe oeUon -
picklng machine Invented by Mr. Chat,
T. Mason , Jr., of Sumter, 8, C , which
states that n fair trial of the machlue re
cently made showed that It wae a euo
oess, In thU test trial It picked two
hundred pound* of seed ootton In oue
hour, which would be S, 000 pounda per
day, requiring only the power of a tin
gle mule.
For several years past various attempts
have been made to build a machine for
gathering cotton from the stalk ; but In
every instance save this the result has
been a failure.
. A syndicate of cspltallsts in Chailes
ton have purchased from Mr. Mason an
Interest In his patent, and as soon as the
Inventor shall have made some Improve
ments to lils machine, the work of msn
ufacturlng them will be oommenoed.
Cotton can then be gathered at a mere
nominal oost, and one hand aud a mule
can pick from 1,200 to 9,000 pounds per
day. What then will become of our
present class of ootton pickers 1 They
will bo foroed to seek other work dur
ing the cotton picking Benson. Tho
farmers will not be troubled In paying
off their pickers, and a new order of af
fairs will of course follow.
A GOOD PRESENTMENT.
The grand Jury In their Into excellent
presentment at the recent term of the
Richland oourt recommended, among
other tilings, the Increase of the pay of
the County Auditor and Treasurer. The
grand jury in our Judgment was exactly
right, and we were pleased at this Im
portant recommendation from so highly
respected a body. We aro aware of the
fact that In many quarters there Is a dis
position to thluk that these offices are
superfluous and a remnant of our former
extravagant aud reckless government.
But no greater mistake has evor occu
pied the mliid of an honest man. Times
have greatly oh an god slnoe tho old tax
system, and while we have no love for
the vostlge of anything that portains to
the days of our long suffering people,
we are yet prepared to frankly say that
there are no more necessary or deserving
offices. The new form and great changes
of our government demand suuh offices,
and we go further and affirm that no
men are worked harder or shoulder more
responsibility than the Treasurers and
Auditors of our respective counties.
Their labor Is hard and persistent. Their
responsibility Is great, and wo will, we
trust, be pardoned for saying that their
degree of patience must sometimes be
equal to, or almost exceed that of Job
himself. We therefore think this no
light matter, and we trust that these de
serving sorvauts of the public will re
ceive their woll merited dues.
RACE TROUBLES.
The telegraph, for the past several
dnya, hns been bringing accounts of se
rious disturbances between the white
and the black raoes in sevoral parts of
the oountry. In Texas, last week, trou
ble was precipitated by the overbearing
attitude of a band of negro outlaws, and
muoh blood-shed was undoubtedly avert
ed by the oool and determined conduct
of the whites, and the prudent course of
one or two wise leaders on the other
side.
In soveral towns In Virginia, within
the past throe or four days, much alarm
has been caused, trouble engendered
and blood spilled. At Danville the con
dition of soolety la greatly disturbed and
the city Is under military control.
Mahone'a crew has done Its work. It
has eaused bloodshed In tho Old Do
minion, and haa engendered strife be
tween the two rnoes.
