''After the boat-started down the river
it backed Into a small Creek to take aboard
a number of persona who had no'tarrlvod

th. it the stoamor was about to strike a
snag Capt. Rhodes pulled tho gong for
tho uoat to shove ahead again, and with
the first revolution of tliu wheel the
boiler exploded with fearful effect. Tho
picnic party were scattered over the
steamer, some of them In the cabin and
some of them on deck. On the upper
deek just over the boiler quite a number
of young ladles and their escorts wore
gathered, a gay and unsuspecting group.
When the explosion occurred the ,bollur
and the upper deck were blown complete
ly out and tho*o who were stsndlng on
tlio upper deck wore nearly all killed or
fatally injured.
The roof of tho cabin which formed the
deck of tho steamer was tilted In by the
explosion and full among the parties
Slithered below. The captain and Mr.

the wheel-house talking, miraculously

the upper deck Miss Minnie Henry was
Instantly killed and fearfully mutilated.
