"The Stamp of Fraud."
It is to bo regretted that the short
note of Mr. C. I''. Adaius to Mr. Til,Ion
should have found it,s way into print.
It lends (ho Bunction of a respcctablc
name to a political slang which ou^ht
to be dropped, if only in the interest of
decency. To assert that the ( stnmp ol
fraud" rests "upon the brow" of Presi
dent Hayes is unqualifiedly falso. That
his clcctiou was securud by fraud on the
part if tho election manipulators ol

scrupulous partisanship of the republican
members of tho electoral commission
which refused to consider these frauds,

not afTect Mr. Hayes. His withdrawal
from tho contest would not have in
augurated Mr. Tilden, but would in all
human probability liavo protracted and
perhaps perpetuated the infamous reign
of (Ion. Grant. So that, on a calm iu
view of all facts, we doubt if a more
patriotic course could ba pointed out
than that which Mr. Hayes pursued.
He has been elected President of the
United States by moons of which he
could not koow and by a party which ho
could nofe. control, and his fame ns a
statesman and patriot will necessarily
depend upon hia official conduct for the
next four years. Ho bids fair to make
it ns bright and untarnished as that of
any of his predecessors. But, af all
others, Mr. Adams should abstain from
throwing stones at his neighbor's sup
posed glass house. For tho election of
Mr. Hayes is not tho "first" instance in
which "fraud'' was chattel with being

Tbo Political Outlook.
The itidepeudont and ]>atriotiu course
thus far pursued by President Hayes
promise* yery fairly to break up the
chronio incrustation* which have lor u
long time hampered tho two great parties
of tho country, and to permit tho cJif"
fercnt elements which make up tli's
American People to readjust themselves
politically according to their affinities,
inclinations or interests, roal or fancied:
Ibr nothing but a name nnd a clique
gives unity now either to tho Demo
cratic or Republican party. These
parties arc themselves divided into fac
tions as hostile and irrecoucileahlo as the
parties themselves are to each other.
Ulainc, Morton, lieast liutler and such
scamps hate Hayes far worso than they
do Tilden ; and on tho other hand,
there is no room for sympathy between
contiactionist and expansionist Demo
crats, of whom Mr. Tilden and ex Gov
eriii-r Allen, of t) iio, mi^ht fairly
be taken as typ s. What bjti'J can
hold tojother elements so repugnant
now when tho President h is reu.ovcd
or is removing those federal encroach
ments upon constitutional liberty made
by I.is prcdcccs or and to with-t net
which was the duty of ail partrio's
and of an importance paramount to every
other political duty of the hour? We
confess wo can see none and imagine
none. The old parties, therefore, must
fall into speedy dissolution an<l new
ones be firmed , whether with new
names or not, whether with a Da lit esq ue
interchange of names, is no matter. We,
therefore, cannot imagine any impropiic
ty in a Southern Democrat accepting
office under appointment from Presi
dent Hayes, though w>? imagine none
with a spirit bigger than tint of a
mouse wouid bocome suitor for office to
the man whom Ihey have so recently or
so bitterly opposed.
