After keeping tho world in a s'ate of

Columbia. Tuesday, AprU 10 ?The
reaaoval of the troops from tho Stste
House to day tu accomplished so quiet
ly u to deprive the oooesion of much of
its purely dramatic iuteresi. Is all save
the ooo essential particular that they
were going out never to return, the
evacuation differed very little from the
usual superoession of the guard which
might have been witnessed any time
dnriog these four mouth*. Governor
Hampton's published request, in furtli
rancc of his promise to iffcyes, that no
Democrat should go near the State
House uuless author.sed by hitu to Jo
so, was carried out to tho letter. No
one was prcsout at the ceremony, and
[ saw nouo on the Capitol ground*,
either before or after the performance.
Twenty minutes before 12 o'clock, your
ojrrcspoodent with two other members
of the press, presented themselves at ^he
frout door, and eut-'red unchallenged, al
though a score of tho colored special
constables wore hanging ab><ut the en
trance watchiug our movements with
sullen, unfriendly glance. Within doors
was a confused crowd of perhaps one
hundred and filiy persons, mostly
uegroes, who were moving about aimless
ly, or standing in grouns of threes and
fours engaged in low and dispirited con
versation. Here and there were to be
soen ooo or two smaller groups of white
Republicans of the better sort similarly
occupied, and all looking badly de
moralised, or, to use a homely phrase,
"decidedly down iu the mouth."
The guard ou duty to-duy was a
detachment of twenty men of Couipany
B, Second Hcgimeut, under command
of Lieut. Hanes. All necessary prepara
tions for the evacuation had been com
pleted before our arrival on the scene,
und the oicu fully aoooutred were rest"
iug in two ruuks and with guns stacked
before the door of the comptroller gene

intent upon oomplying with its precise
instructions as to the hour of departure,
to wit. precisely twelve. Hit nervous
ness affected his subordiusto offioers,
from these it spread to the crowd, snd
no second was permitted to psss altogeth
or unobserved in its flight. At ten
minutes before 12 Lieut, Hurriss suldou
ly sounded the order, uAttention!''
which t was generally observed by the
crowd throughout the building, as well
as by tho handful of men to whom it
was more particularly addressed. Tb< n
cunto in rapid suooessiou, "Take srms,"
"unfix buyonots," "carry arms," "count
fours," "twos right," "march I" The
last order brought the squad sharply
down on tl<e crowd, which gave wuy to
allow s free passage to the door. But
tho time was oot yet up, and a sudden
halt was made as the leading file reach
ed tho sooth eritranoe. The sentry oo
duty before the Kxecutive office, now
relieved for tho last time, resumed his
plaoe in the ranks, and the commsud,
' Order arms," being given, the men
stood at cane in their plaoos. The few
remaining minutes or the ten koemod to
loiter as they passed. Presently the
sergeant, who had timed his watch with
tho City Hall boll,'' which in turn was
set with the clock in the tel.-graph
offioo, wnioh in turn wus regulated from
Washington by telegraph, whispers to
the lieutenant, "Ouo rninuto more, sir,"
and is directed to take his stand at the
south door, next to the City Hall, and
to give notice of tho first tap of the
clock bell by a wavo of his hund. Col.
Black, seeing the manoeuvre, rocalltd
the sergeant snd sent Lieut Briggs, (.f
the seme company, to take tlie post of
warning. Tho seconds are minutes now,
-?nd everybody is listeuins for tho sound
or watching for the signal. There it
goes I Lieut Briggs waves his hand to
indicato the first tap, whioh was n< t
heard in the recesses of the hall, ai.d
advances rapidly to Co!. Blaok to report
the fact. The Colonol says,' Don't run,
sir." The lieutenant joins the squad!
Then is heard, "Attcitioo, guard I"
"Carry arms I" "Right shoulder arms I"
"Two< right, march I" Tho s< u id of
heavy and hurriod footfalls rcaoundi
along the corridors, snd before the bell
has reached tho fifth stroko pf the
twelve tho lost file has crossed tho thres
hold. * A number of the negro consta
bles, ovidontly scting under peremptory
and urgent orders, instantly sprang to
the heavy doors sod slammed them to
with a bang, in the fsoe of the crowd
within, and in the immediate rear of
the last file of soldiers without, wlo sis
hardly out of the way of ths dosing
panels. A heavy har dropped iato its
brackets, and the military oeeu patio* of
the State is eaded, much to the relief of
the eitiaena sod the military as well.
