Although not habitually a resident of
Camden, until near the clo*e of his life,
his personal, political, social and do.
niestic relations were so closely interwo

under review. Gov. Miller was born in
lender Muryt in 17H7; graduated

1811, and until 1818 waa eminent in his
profession throughout all thia aeotiou of
the State. Ho was a nan oi rare native
powere, improved by high and elasaio
culture. His publi: career was one of lhe
brightest, moat rapid and must successful
among the bright galaxy by whom he
waa surrounded. Served in congress
1818 and 1820?State Senator from Clar
endon 1822 to 1828, whon he wns elec
ted Governor, in 1830 waa elected Sena*
tor to United Statea Congress, but only
served fur two yean, when owing to ill
health and the exaatiogdeiMnda of large
private interests, he reaigned. Thus
for fourteen years oonaecotivoly aud
uninterrupted)^ he ably iiltd the highest
offioea in the gift of the people and the
State, and retlrod in the very priiuo of
his ability and usefulness, when but for
failing health a high and nbble future
lay bofore him. Gov. Miller married
iu 1821 Miss Mary Bojrkin, of this place
who yet survived, enjoying the veneration
aud esteem of all who know her.# Ho
reinaiued with his family here for ?oiue
years after retiring from private life, but
owning large intureeta in Mississippi,
died there while on a visit iu 1838, in tho
fifty-first year of his age; all hia high pub
lic honors and duties had been aohieved
and disc hit rod by the tiuie he had reach
ed the age of forty five. Had his
health been spared high dee-fa and
uoble works would ?t II avi been his.
To one who by personal association
has known all the fumilios of this vici
nage for fifty year*; who by association
with thnso who have gone before, and
by Audition is equally familiar with the
history of all who havo lived here since
the early settlement of this district, It is
sn interesting and instructive study to
traoe how strikingly traits, characterist
ics, even habits, are transmitted through
generations. Much of profit eould be
learned from, and volumes wiuld be
written on this subjeot by proper hands.

Mr. Thotnss J. Withors was a native
of York i)i*triot, graduated with high
distinction st the So. (Ja. college iu Dee.
1825, in a class with Gov. Aiken, Judge
Dawkius, Bishop Klliot, Gov, Hsin
mood, Handel Ilunt, and others who
have inscribed thoir namos on the high
roll of fame.
He w ib admitted to the bar and eet~
'led in Columbia; Immediately taking
hij^h rank at the bar, and in political af
faire, then greatly exoiting the publio
mind. Having married Miss KHsaheth
Boy kin, of Camden, he settled here about
the commencement of the great Nullifi
cation struggle, and was very prominent
here, aa he had been iu Columbia, in the

solicitor of the Kastern circuit: an oftioe

and did his State great service until
about 1848, when impaired health Indu

along so happily together. In a brighter
day, it was tho habit of society here to
entertain distinguished visitors with a

conversation of Judge Withers and Mr.

their enforced silence, while they suffered
in common with a few ladies as eminent

ago, and had several dinner parties given

Mr. William E. Johnson was a native
of Laneastor District, where he was boiq
about the oloso of the last century. Ho
removed to (jutndcn before ho was grown
and here led a long, useful aud houored
life, filling many position* of trust and
oon fide nee ably and honorably. Mr.
Johnson was prendout of the Bank of
I :itfv! from 1843 up to its close, since
the n-r, aud" managed that institution
with masterly suocess while anything
was ?uoco!?$ful in South Carolina. Ho
was possessed of u very high order of
intellect, aud although not enjoying in
youth the advantages of a oollegiato ?d^
ucation, readiug, travel. and association
made him a cultivated man. He was an
earnest advocate for noitifi
and admiration than thoauof Turnboll,
(Brutus.) We have above alluded to
his conversational powers, which made
him us host or guest <)oe of the most
agreeable members of society in hisdsy.
More than to any one else, this oommu.
nity ia Indebted to Mr. Juhnson for tho
improvement and embellishment of
Kirkwood. Over thirty years since, bo
became possessed of (Jrceu's Spring,
Mortimer s Spring. &c., bought oat uiauy
proprietors oflittle summer resorts, and
has iudood "made the wilderness to bios
som as the rose." His rt-stdonoa, prem
ises, trees shrubbery, torrnoes, lakes, &c.,
are indeed -'a thing of beauty," and form
tho most attractive feature iu the delight
ful village of Kirkwood. To theae adorn
ments he 'looted the leisure hours of au
active life. 11c survived nearly all of his
old associate but has sloDt for three or
four years in tho "Old (Junker Oematevy.'
His impiovemeuts at Kirkwood form u
