Patrick, who doubted the effect escribed to
creosote, yet were prepared to give it a Mr
trill. Dr. Chapeta introduced a patlsat
with an apparent oaac of "ascroeas a? the
alveola," aad reference was made by ether
members to totimpuadlag cases in their
preetioe.
Dr Brown infrodaeed a patient whh a
fissure in the palate organ, ca?si by a blow
when the patient was 7 yea** eld. The in
jury ext ended to the germ of the eye tooth,
which was found la a partially undeveloped
condition In the alveolus j tnfe incisor was
also removed. An obturator had been worn
severe! years. Drs. J. B. Pactriok and W.
8 Brown held the clinic.
Dr. 1. H. Alexander ?ead a paper on the
use of celluloid (a preparation of gun cotton)
a base for artificial teeth, as a substitute for
the vuloaaite. Dr. A. gave his experience
and expressed himself in favor of it. The
association awarded him the credit of being
the first to use steam in place of oil?the use
of the oil rendering the working of the cel
luloid more doubtful.
Dr. J. B. Patrick read a paper on "den
tal malformations and irregularities," illus
trating his cases with models and drawings
on the black-board. His remarks were de
livered iu his usual fluent style, and were
listened to with marked attention by all the
association. The appliances for artificially
restoring the loss of thV velum and adjacent
parts were beautifully executed.
Dr. league presented a new preparation
for taking impressions, in placc of wax or
plaster. He also offered an appliance for
operative dentistry, both of which were re
fcred to a committee.
A committee was appointed, consisting of
Drs. Wright, Chupcin, Uissell, Kice and
Norwood, to draft an act to be submitted to
the next legislature to regulate the practice
of dentistry. Adjourned.
FRIDAY.
The avociation assembled at 10 o'clock,
the president in the chair. The committee
reported the act for the regulation of the
practice of dentistry which was read and
unanimously adopted.
Drs. J. B. Patrick and T. T. Moore were
added to the committee. Dr. J. R. Solo
mons presented a patient with the (are den
tal malformation of twin teeth, central in
cisors, connected in both crown and roots?
lateral incisors being present in the law.
The teeth were, after a free discussion or the
cose, extracted.
The following officers were choeen, by ac
clamation, to serve for the ensuing year :
Drs. Theodore P. Chupcin, Charleston, pres
ident, Q. F. H. Wright, Pomaria, first vice
president; M. BiiseD, Camden, second rice
president; O 0. Patrick, Charleston, corres

The meeting was entirely harmonious in
all Its proc e lings, all the members express
ing themselves delighted with the urb?uiity

physically. The only regret expressed by
the members was in reference to the luke

A COTTON CASS,
A mm wo* recently tried and determine^

Some months ago a bale of cotton was sold
to a merchant, as sound eotton, and judging
of the whale bile from the sample shown, he
purchased and shipped it to his (betor. Be
fore shipping, however, the eotton was dis
eorered to be considerably damaged on one
side, and notice em* given to the pervon fr?m
whom it was purchased. The eotton was af
terwards shipped and eeld for a pri?e below
what wae paid for It bj the merchant, where
epon he brought in action for damages and
succeeded in gaining a euAeient award.
Thooe persons who are not in the habit of
star-casing are poeeibly not aware of the
fact that s new ooinet has put in an appear
ance. It is situated in the north en heaven*,
just beneath the polar star, and sear the
Groat Dipper or seren stars, and Is said by
the knowing ones to be just risible to the
naked eye. * With the assistence of a spy.
glass, it can be seen as a nebulous mass
with a bright point a little to one ride. It
is now risible nearly all night, but will soon
be so only in the early hours of the erening.
Astronomers say it will be brightest in Au
gust, but that its tnil will be clearly risible
tn a short time.

Be it enacted by the Sonafce and House
of Representatives of the State of South
Carolina, now met and sitting in General
Assembly, and by the authority of the
same.
Section 1. That all real and personal
property in thia State, and personal
property of residents of this State, which
may be kept or used temporarily out of
the State, with the intention of bringing
the same into the State, or which has
been sent out of the State for sale and
not yet sold; alLmoneya, credits, invest
ments in bonds, stocks, joint stock com
panies, or otherwise, o^utiea resident
in this State, sha^fte subject to taxa

8ection 5. There shall be nsssssod off
all taxable polls in this State an annual
tax of one dollar on eaoh poll, the pro
ceeds of which tax shall be applied solely
to educational purposes. Every male
between the ages of twenty-one and fifty
years, except thosejncapable of earning a
support from being maimed, or from any
other cause, shall be deemed taxable
polls.
'Tis believed by home persons that
bince the war it is an utter imposibility
to obtain a good cigar exoept at an en
ormous figure. There are some excep
tions, however, to the general rule, and
there are some establishments where
good cigars may even yet be obtained,
and at reasonable prices. Such an one
is that of the Indiau Girl cigar store in
Columbia. *

July, 1874, in accordance with Joint Reso
lution of the Legislature, "providing lor the
re-eeeese*ent of Real I'-siate in 1^74," ap
proved March 17th, 1^71.
As ao accommodation to the tax-payer* of
this County, who reside nt a distance from
this office, I will be at the places named be
low, on the days specitied, trecoivc their
returns.
All persons neglecting to make their re
turns at the placcs specified in their Town
ships, will bo required to do so at tliia otlico
in Camden, before the 2(Mb day of August
next, after which dato any tax-payers who
shall have failed to make then rrtnrns w ill

c? nt. penalty added thereto.
Every male person between tue ages of 21
and ">0 years whether owning property or not
except those unable oi earning a support
from being maimed or otherwise disabled,
are liable to a poll-tax, and are required to
make their returns.
All persona tailing to make returns of their
polls will be required to pay a double tax,
and on failing to do so, are liable to bo in
dicted and imprisoned ten days, in r.cc-or
dance with Act No. 2B7, Sessions of lb72-74.
