In accordance with the suggestion ot
the taxpayers convention, a public meet
ing was held in town hall, on Saturday,
last, for the purpose of hearing the re
port of the Kershaw delegation. Col.
Shannon took the chair at 12 J o'clock,
and called the meeting to order. Gen.
J. B. Kershaw, chairman, made the op
ening speech, after which he offered the
following resolutions, which wero adop
ted :
Resolved, That wc earnestly urge upon
the people of lverehaw county who an;
in favor of an honeHt and chcap govern
ment the duty and neoessity of org?ni
zing tax-unions, in accordance with the
recommendations of the tax-payer's con
I vention, upon the single principle ni in
telligence, honeaty and oconomy of ad
ministration, and the prc.iorvation of the
rig its and liberties of the citizens, irre
spective of all conditions of party, class
or condition.
Jietotvrd, That the chairman of this
meeting, at his leisure, appoint a commit
tee of five from Camden, and three from
each of the other old election precincts of
Kershaw county, to organize one or
more tax-unions in each of said precincts
and when a sufficient number shall be
organized, to organize a central union,
consisting of delegates from the pro
cinct unions.
Remarks upon the resolutions were
made by Messrs, E. M. Boykin, M.
Baum,T. II. Clarke, J.^D. Kennedy and
A. P. Linning.
A committee of three was appointed
for the purpose of raising funds for the
purpose of defraying the expanses of
Gdns. J as Chesnut and .1. B. Kershaw,
members of the Memorial Committee, to
and from Washington.
. After other remarks, the meeting was
adjourned.
