prepared to receive the RETURNS Tor the TAXES
of 1864.
In order to aid tax-payers in prewiring their returns,',
the following schedule aud classification of taxable articles
is published:
CLASS I-?All Property Engaged in Agriculture.
The kinds of property which shall be considered as
employed in agriculture are : All lands actually cultivated.
or connected with or contributing to such cul- tivatiou,
such as wood or pasture lands; all slaves, I
little, big, old and young, above twelve yeaisof age, r
as are properly known and designated as plantation or
farm negroes, as contradistinguished from mechanlt-s c
of house servants or others not connected with a lanu a
or plantation ; all hoises, mules and oxen- used as
work animals on a farm or plantation, as coutra-dis
tinguished from family horses or horses of pleasure, (
and from horses, mules or stock cattle upon such es- '
late but not actually used in tilling the soil: ali ploughs,
carts, wagons (lud implements of husbandry generally
used and necessary to the proper cultivation of the crops.

II. The Confederate authorities have made a requisiion
upon the State for Two Thousand laborers monthly,
.'lie proportion of one-fourth heretofore called for, had

act and the great urgency of tho demand for labor at
his time, it is deemed expedient to shorten the interal
between the Calls,-and increase the quota. .This is
10 violation of the law, for it docs dot fix the quota of
abor, nor the interval between the calls, but prescribes

equsitftm, giving thirty days notice. Each Division
