In order to aid tax-payers in preparing their returns,
the following schedule and classification of taxable ar,
tides is published :
CLASS I?.4# Property Engaged in Agricu.'ture.
The kinds of property which shall bo considered as
"employed in agriculture, are All lands actually cultivated
or connected with or contributing to such cultivation,
such as wood or pasturo lands; all slaves,
little, big, old'and young, above twelve years of age, '
as are properly known and designated as .plantation or
farm negroes, as contradistinguished from mechanics 1
or house servants or others not connected with a larra
or plantation ; {ill hot scs, mules and oxen used as
work animals 011 a farm or plantation, as contra-distinguished
froth family .horses or hotses of pleasure,
ntid froin Jiorse.s, muled or stock cattlo upon such estate
but not actually used in tilling the soil; all ploughs,
carts, wagons and implements of husbandry generally
used and necessary to the proper cultivation of *the

chard.
Flour, meal, BUgar, molasses, bacon, lard and all
otfrer groceries, merchandize, spirituous liquors, wine,
cider, etc.
Valuo of household and kitchen furniture, agricultural
tools and implements, owned but not employed
in agriculture, and all tools of mechanics or others,
musical instrunients and all articles of domestic use,
carriages, wagons, drays, carts and every species of
vehicles on "wheels not employed iu agriculture; books,
mapsj.pictares, paintings statuary and other works of
art.
The Assets of all banks or other joint stock compa*
nios, whether incorporated or not, are taxed just as individuals
are taxed?banks paying a tax on their capital
and reserved funds, and returning their gold and
silver coin as others are requited to do.
Gold and silver ware and plate, jewels, jewelry and
-watches; gold and silver coin, gold dust, gold or silver
bullion /valuo of moneys hold abroad, bills of ex-change
<jn foreign countries, prqpiissory notes, rights,
credits and securities, including Confederate bonds; all
solvent credits, bank bills and all other paper issued
as currency?except non-interest bearing Confederate
Treasury notes?and not' employed in a registered
business. . .
- ' On all profits made by buying and selling articles?
. . purchased since the 1st January, 18G3?between the

Thereps also a tax^f 1 per cent, on all property duo
and payable in.lS64, under the Act to raise money to
increase the pay of soldiers.
Tax-payers are urged, tfs there has been necessarily .

I COMMISSIONERS OF ROADS AND "TIE
town authorities within the Judicial Districts of
Lancaster' Kershaw, "Chesterfield, Darlington, Marl* .
boro, Marion, Sumter, Clarendon, Williamsburg, and
Horry, .will lorthwith summon all slaveholders within
their respective limits to deliver ONE-HALF of their J
slaves, liable to road duty, at the Railroad depots nearest
their residence, on TUESDAY TIJE 21TH DAY
OFSEPTEMBER NEXT, at 8 o'clbck, a. m ,-tfiero to' ^
await transportation to Charlestbn, for thirty' Jdys
labor cn tlve fortifications.
II. The Confederate authorises have made a requisition
upon therStatd for Two Thousand laborers mffnfUty.
The proportion of one-lburth heretofore'called for, had
failed to supply half of this number. In view of this N
fact and the great urgency of the demand for labor at
this time, it is deemed expedient tp shorten the interval
between the calls, and increaso the quota. This is
no violation of the law, for it does not fix the quota of
labor, not' the interval between the calls, but prescribes
that such proportion shall be called for as will fill the
requsition,' giving thirty davn notice. Each -Division
in the order fixed will bo required to furnish this '
auota. and no injustice will be done to any.
III. All parties, whether individuals or companies,
who own or employ more than one road hand, aro required
to furnish their quota, (one-half) nnless relieved
by detail lrom Department Headquarters. This can
relieve only those hands permanently engaged on the
specific work for winch tho detail was granted Com
misSioners of roads will give their attention to this .
matter and report to this office.
IV. Great confusion exists from the imperfect manner
in which tho names of owners aro given to agents
at the several .depots. It is the duty of one, or more
of the Commissioners, to be present to verify the quota
of each ownor, and prepare correct lists.
Within five daya after delivery on this call they will
please forward this office names of defaulters in their
respective divisions of roads.
