District hereby give notice that they arc now
prepared to receive the RETURNS for the TAXES

order to aid tax-payers in preparing their returns,
the following schedule and eliissilicntion of taxable articles
is published :
CLASS I?All Property Engaged in Agriculture.
The kinds of property which shall bo considered os
employed in agriculture aro : All lauds actually cultivated
or connected with or contributing to such cultivation,
such as wood or pasture lauds; all slaves,
little, big, old and v^uug, above twelve years of age,
as aro properly known and designated ns plantation or
farm nefcrues, as contradistinguished from inecjianics
or house servants or others not counected "with a larm
or plantation ; all hoises, mules and oxen used as
work animals on a farm or plantation, as coutra-disXinguished
from family horses or horses of pleasure,
and from horses, mules of stock emtio upon such estate
Out not actually used In tilling the soil; all ploughs,
carts, wagons and implements of hu<b:indry gcuerallj*
used and necessary to the proper cultivation of the
crops.
CLASS II- ?A 11 Property of every kind, Peal, Pertonal
and Mixed, nut employed in Agriculture. '
. This properly will embrace lands not employed in '
agriculture; all real estate.in cities, towns and vil- !

- Cotton, wool, tobacco, corn, wheat, rye. oats, buck- 1
wheat and all kinds of grain; potatoes and all kinds
of peas, and all products of. the larm, garden or or- 1
chard.'
Flour, meal, sugar, molasses, bacon, lard and all '
other groceries, merchandize, spirituous liquors, wine, |
cider, etc. %
Value of household and kitchen furniture, ngricul- 1
tural tools and implements, owned but not employed
in agriculture, and all tools of mechanics or others,
musical instruments and all articles of domestic use, 1
carriages, wajjons, drays, carls and every specios of
vehicles on wheels not employed in agriculture; books,
maps, pictures,, paintings, statuary and oilier works of :
art.

credits'and securities, including Confederate bonds; all
solvent credits, bank bills and all ot her paper issued

On all profits made by buying and selling articles?
purchased since the 1st January, 18G3?between the
11th February and 1st July, 180-1, a tax of 2u 'per ,

There is also a tax of 1 per cent, on all property due ]
and payable in 180-1. under the Act to raise money to ^
increase the pay of sohlieis
Tax-payers are urged, as there has been necegsnfily
so inuch'delay, to lie prompt in making their returns

II. The Confederate authorities have made ft requisition
upon the Slate for Two Thousand laborers monthly.
The proportion of one-fourth heretofore called for, had
failed to supply half of this number, lit >iew of this
fact and the groat urgency of the demand for labor at
this time, it is doomed expedient to shorten the internal
between the calls, and increase the quota. This is
tu> violation r.f the law. for it does not lix the quota of
labor, nor the interval bi-twceu the calls, but prescribes
that such proportion shall he called fur as will fill the
rcqusition, giving thirty days notice. Each Division
in the order lixed will 1*3 required to furnish this
quota, and no injustice will bo dono to'nny.
III. All parties, whether individuals or companies,
who own or employ more than ono road hand, are required
to furnish their quota, (one-half) unless relieved
by detail from Department Headquarters. Tins can
relieve only thoso bands permanently engaged on the
specific work for which the detail was granted Commissioners
of roads will givo their attention to this
matter and report to tills office.
IV. Great confusion exists from the imperfect man
ner in which the unfiles of owners arc given to agents
nt tho several depots. It is the duly of one, or riiore
of the Commissioners, to be present to verify the quota
of each owner, and prepare correct lists.
Within live days after delivery on this cnll they will
please forward to this office names of defaulters in their
respective divisions of roads.
