operas, known throughout the whole world of
music: This illustrious master was .born" at
Berlin in 1794 ; he showed caily talents for
music, and was a fellow pupil of Weber, under
the Abbe Voglcr, at Darmstadt, at the age of
15. In his style he has carried the power of
sound, j)cr sc> to its highest allowable pitchy
and has thus paved the way for the modern
German school of music. . While at times he
terrifies his audience with the amazing breadth
and volume of sound in which lie exults, lie can
also charm them to tears by the delicate manipulation
of his subject and the exquisite pathos
of bis melody* lie lived and died in the Jewish
faith, like llalcvy, his brother and competitor,
whom he has followed so closely to the
grave.
