A Ju^'ier in Turkey.
The exemplification of the adage,
when in Turkey you must do as the
turkies do, is given in the Providence
Journal. Tlie reputation of Simmons,
the magician, had proceeded
him to Constantinople, and the Sultan
commanded his appeaauce. The
Ornithological Paradox, in which
the magician cuts off the heads of a
hlack and white pigeon, and sends
them flying each with the other's
h'ead, concluded the entertainment.
The Sultan had watched the movements
of the dexterous prestidigitateur
; then turning to an officer, gave
an order in a whisper. The officer
disappeared, and soon returned with
a large Damascus yatagan, glittering
as .a sunheam. A royal gift, thought
Simmons. In a moment two slaves
appeared, one wlnte, the other black.
"Kow" said tlie Sultan, "that we
may see that thy skill does realty

The slaves trembled no more than
the astonished Simmons. Recovering,
