will come off at Boykin's Mill on the first Monday in

V.'e publish to-day the able and pointed letter of the
lion. A. B. Loxgstreet, rebuking the insult offered
by Lord Brougham to the American Minister and his
country, at the Statistical Congress in London. It is
just the vciy thing, and applies with a master hand a
withering castigation to his Lordship, and those who
' are meddling with the South and her "peculiar institution'"
where they have no right, and whose officious
and villainous intermeddling is yet to bring trouble
and ruin upon their own heads.

I On Friday evening, about 8 o'clock, some burning
j link! on the outside of a lamp in the hands of Miss i
! Mood, daughter of Mr. T. S Mood, caught lire. A negro
woman immediately snatched it out of her hand.
1 but, unfortunately, the clothes of tlie faithful servant
- ignited, when she dashed down the lamp and ran out '
- into the street, ami ho&ire (he burning clothing could
be extinguished, she was so injured that but little i
f hope is entertained fur her recovery. The dress of
a Miss Mood hail caught lire, but through the presence
of mind of Mr. Mood, was soon put out. Although
- no alarm had been sounded by the bell, the lire companies
were promptly on the spot.

rock near the upper reservoir, had his arm blown oil'

Steamer ix Collision- with a "Whale.?On Inst
Monday forenoon, as the St. John steamer Eastern
City wis on her passage from this city to Portland,
-he ran upon a whale, knocking oil' her forefoot, and
causing a slight leak. At thai time the vessel was
ibotit ten miles X. X. K. of Thatcher's Island, and was
foinjj nt her usual speed. A school of five whales
ivcre in sight, playing about, when suddenly one of
hem rose just forward of the bows, and was struck
)ii the side, about two-thirds of the way back from the
lead, causing quite a shock to the vessel. The whale
love instantly, and not being seen again, was supposed
to be killed. It was a large whale, judged by those

It affords a melancholy pleasure to recall flic virtues
and celebrate the excellencies of beloved ones who
have been removed by death. These, affection is
prone to magnify, whilst imperii etions and faults are
permitted to slumber in Ibrgotl'ulness. Hence inscriptions
placed upon monuments here below, often bear
little resemblance to the record made above. In the
following bi ief tribute, however, to one who was love

.Mr. Anderson was :i man peculiarly amiable and
gentle. courteous in his deportinent. anil of great kindness
of heart. Engaged for many years in the turmoil
and perplexities of business, lie maintained an unspotted
reputation. He was known in the community to
he "an Israelite indeed, in whom was no guile."
In early life he professed faith in Christ and. Isoaine
a member of the Presbyterian Church, the honored
Church of his fathers and of his native land. In meekness
and humility, lie endeavored to trend in the lootstops
of those wiio "confessed that they were strangers
ami pilgrims on the earth." lie lived as one who felt
that lie must give account. A few months before his
death, the Church of v.hieh lie was a member, called
liitn to discharge the important duties pertaining to
the ofiicc of ruling elder. Acknowledging the hand of
God in this appointment, lie assumed its responsibilities,
and looked to Divine aid tor assistance. The few
months that he lived as a ruler in God's house, gave
great promise of usefulness. But alas! he was called
away too soon for those who survive, lie has gone
to the grave, hut lie will long live enshrined in the
memory of those who loved him.
"Let me die the detail of the righteous, and let my
last i ml be like his."
