is a constitutional disease] a corruption of the
blood, by which this fluid becomes vitiated,
weak, and poor. Being in the circulation, it
pervades the whole body,] and may burst out
in disease on any part of it. No organ is free
from its attacks, nor is there one which it may
not destroy. The scrofuhjus taint is variously
caused by mercurial disease, low living, disordered
or unhealthy fow , impure air, filth
and filthy habitst the dej ressing vices, nnd,
above all, by the venereal infection. Whatever
be its origin, it is he editary in the constitution,
descending " fron parents to children
unto the third iind fourth J neration;" indeed,
it seems to be the rod of Him who says, " I
will -visit the iniquities o ' the fathers upon
their children."
Its effects commence by Icposition from the
blood of corrupt or ulcerq Is matter, which, in
the lungs, liver, and intern '1 organs, is termed
tubercles; in the glands, swellings; and on
the surface, eruptions or so 'es. This foul corruption,
which genders in i ie blood, depresses
the energies of life, so that crofulous constitutions
not only suffer frp 1 scrofulous complaints,
but they have far ess power to withstand
the attacks of otht diseases; consequently
vast numbers p rish by disorders
which, although not scrofu jus in their nature,
are still rendered fatal 1 1 this taint in the

in this scrofulous contmii ption; and many
destructive diseases of t'c 1'vMcr, kidneys, brain,
and, indeed, of all tKeorg^Bns, arise from or

One quarter of all of peojRde arc scrofulous;
their persons are hrded Bby this lurking infection,

properties, the invalid who is bowed down with
