That the Bars or Stands in Taverns and the doors of each Stdfe where liqour is sold, shall be closed on Sunday, and it shall not be lawful to sell liquors of any description on any part of the premises of said taverns or stores on that day. Sec. 16. And be it further ordained Hint no slaves, or persons of color whether bond or free, shall be permitted to assemble or loiter in or about any liquor store, or store where liquor is kept, whe ther such store is licensed or not, or in and about the door thereof, or he allowed to sit down and remain there any longer than while actually engaged in purchasing such articles as they may be lawfully authorized to procure. Nor, shall any such slave or free person of color be allowed to enter or remain in any inner room or on the premises connected with such store, under a penalty of not more than twenty lashes, to be inflicted by order of the Intendnndt or uny Warden, and the owner or keeper of such store, whether lie or sho shall have license or not, shall forfeit and nay a sum not less than five, norc more than twenty dollars, in every case where such negroes or free persons of color shall be found assembled in his or her store, or at the door thereof, or shall be found sitting down therein or violating any ofthe provisions of this section of this Ordinance, contrary to the true intent nud meauing thereof; and every such slave or free person of color not having a written permit from his master or guardian, may be taken up aod lodged in the guard house, and shall be dealt with in tfie some manner as slaves or persous of color mif nfter nell-rintr without a ticket and it shall be lawful for the Intendnut or any Warden or Town Marshal, or any oft'ie town Guard to enter in at all times into such liquor stores, and to examine the same and to arrest any slave or free persons of color found therein without a ticket; and if any po?on shall refuse admittance, resist or oppose assault or insult any such officer while in the cxecntiou of anv oftho duties imposed bv this Ordinance, such offender, if a while person,shall forfeit and pay a fine of not less than twenty dollars, nor more than fifty dollars;and if the offender be a slave or free porson 01 coior, lie or j she shall receive any number of lashos which may be ! adjudged by the Iiitcixlant or nn v Warden, not cx- i ccedin? thirty-nine lnshos at nny one time.
