OBITUARY.
Died, in Chester District on Tuesday the 14th inst.j
after a severe illutss of three weeks, Mrs. Amanda S.>
wife of Dr. William Wylie, in the 29th year of her
age.
Alas! we bloom to-day, to-morrow die. How soon
has the parent stem withered, from which a sweet
flower had lately fallen.
Aqd is it true that' the mother and the child sleep
together? It is even so, for scarce had the wearied
eye of fond affection, reposed for one moment from its
anxious grief, until another loved one was called to the
spirit land, away from home kindred and all.
Death loves a shining mark, and the insatiate archer
with unerring aim lias gained another prize. Our
friends; we see them fall "like leaves in wintry
weather." and yet, how little do we lay to heart these
solemn, suent, ana lauiuui aamonuions. joora icacn
us so to uumbcr our days that we may apply our hearts
unto wisdom.
The writer of this feeble tribute knew Mrs. "Wylie
as one to admire and love. Those social qualities of
heart and character, with a cultivated and gifted mind
made her a valued friend and acquaintance In her
life she filled a sphere of usefulness which was highly
honorable. Her death has caused a blank which time
can never fill up
To her afflicted family the loss is irreparable?her
place is vacant?never to be filled on earth. How
sweet the consolation that we have hope in her death,
and though lost to those who loved her here on earth,
? they may all meet in Heaven.
Tribute of Respect.
The C<jmn>ittee appointed on the part of
Wateree Division, No. 0. Sons of Temperance,
to prepare resolutions expressive of the deep
regrpt, and sincere sorrow of the Division, at
the <feath of Past Worthy Patriarch Lewis
W. Ballard, feel, that in the discharge of that
duty, they hut express the heartfelt sentiments
of the Sons of Temperance, and of those who
knew him best, in saying, that the death of
Brother Ballard will .be severely felt by us as
a Division, and the loss to our community of
such a man is a serious affliction.
Th is not. nnrs tr? pnloirizn t.hp broth
er. We have no inclination or taste for tlie
use of sett phrases, or empty panegyrics. His
past life and character speak more truthfully
and forcibly than any words of ours. True
merit will be appreciated, and' here we are
willing to rest our tribute to one. who was
faithful in the discharge of his public duties,
and in all the social relations of lifosexemplary
and honorable.
As a Son of Temperance, our departed brother
was devoted and zealous, and in his daily
intercourse amongst us, illustrated the three
great principles upon which we rest?L<>ve,
Purity, and Fidelity. Around his lamented
grave we have stood, and in deep sincerity of
soul, with full and hurthened hearts, hade adieu
to our faithful brother. Be it ?
