UmhaAIh in Cnhtkaeri knrt'innIf ftro micv VI 119 UUIICIIW lit WUUVIIVKI UVI VIVUIVUI V( We last season used a ton of guano on melons, garden vegetable", and the only benefit which we could find we had derived from tbe nse of tbe ton was io keeping away the striped bug from the melon vines. .The season was said to be unpropitious tor guano to tell, and we have used another ton this season, with no better results. Five hundred melon, hills, mamired with guano, have cot paid for the labor of cultivating. It is true, tbe season was unfavorable for melons, but five hundred bills manured with stable manure, &c., in the same field, planted at the same time, yielded a fair crop of large fiue melons. On vegetables it is only safe to use it in a liquid state, and were we to speak our whole mind, it is only fit to use in a liquid state in a Southern climate on any crop. It is urged by those who advocate its use, that the two past seasons have been unfavorable to the devek opttient of its wonderful virtues. Grant it? " t onn fuid 11 flint 5a c/1 tillVI nc wiiicuu iimv uuj icii vimmi fii<?v u ov costly and precarious should not be introduced on Southern soil. ~ , It iff again urged, that there is much of it sold that is not genuine. This wc believe, and the Southern cultivator that has his own interest at stake, should look well to the domestic guanos before he spends his money and loses bis time and crop on a worthless imported article. Every farmer or gardener that can afford to buy a ton of guano, can by a judicious use of tho same money, make two tons of a better fertilizer for Southern soils. Tho great virtue of guanoes said to be in its containing all the liquid and solid excrements of bird". Who saves the liquid manures of the South ? Another great virtue in guano is itsphosphs.tes. Who saves the bones about bis premises ?? Were we as anxious to save money as to spend it, our yards, streets and dwellings would be much cleaner, sweeter and healthier; for we should convert all the offal and filth into an inodorous and fertilizing food for plants. A manure that is so uncertain its operations, so liable to adulteration, even were it iaiu at our door free gratis for nothing, is not worth the attention of Southern gardeners; hut when we take into consideration its costliness, it must be a gold-bearing crop that can bear it under the most favorable circumstances. This is our experience in the matter of guano. Soil of the South. What The Farmer Most N^eds.?It is not a college endowed by the State, says a cotemporary; it is a primary school, to prepare fanner's sons and daughters for the higher walks of science as applied to agriculture. The; need organization. They want farmer's clubs and neighborhood libraries of good agricultural books. Tbey need more discussion. Tbey need more intercourse, not, omy m their own town nnd country but throughout the State and country, to see and learn what others farmers are doing, and adopt. This is the greatest need of farmers. They need to become satisfied with their avocation?to get rid of the prevailing notion that fanning is nesaarily an unmental employment. The fan, mer is accustomed to think that he has no occasion for education, and never can become wealthy, or what the world calls respectable, while engaged in the culture of the earth, and therefore be seeks the first opportunity to escape from an avocation placed under ban, not nnlv hv ail others, but by his own class also. ??y ? ? The great need of a farmer is thai he shall de. el are himself independent of all classes; at least more so than they are of him, and is entitled (6-engage in any other calling whatever, and if he is a man of toil, that is no reason why be should not be a man of inteiect. - The great need of a farmer is organization, and this must be accomplished by a few self sacrificing men, who will undertake the labor of estab lisbing and maintaining farmer's clubs in every neighborhood. Farmers need not drop politics to take up agriculture. They must talk, xead and think.?Southern Agriculturist, Planting Fbuit Trrbs.?With this month begins the season for transplanting.
