The mayor presided, the meetings were largely attended, and their influence for good marked anddecided. We give a passage from Dr. Lees' speech on JjLj the first evening. Did any man ever hear of a man beating his wife or committing almost any other act of disgraceful violence, hearing the plea that it was drink that did it! (Hear.) But did any man ever ^^arof a man beating bis wife because he had . taken a mutton chop too much? (Laughter.) Mr.. Whittle Harvey was inconsistent; for whilst be would not allow interference with puhjio-houses, he would prohibit the sale of intoxicating drinks in the Sydenham Crystal Palace, because be objected, to the people being 'stifled' with intoxicating drinks there.? : (Hear, bear.) If those liquors ' stifled' the people In such a beautiful place, where they were surrounded by all that was elevating, and in Spiring, and ennobling, what must be the effect of the traffic iu places where none of these good influences existed to connteractthe evil? la the courts, and alleys, and back slams of - our large towns ? (Applause.) But legislative Interference was not new in this matter.? < In 1552, an act was passed by the Legislature denouncing tlie open trade in intoxicating drinks, reciting the manifold abuses which had tor centuries existed in what were commonly V called tippling houses, declaring that the traf . fie in strong drinks was incompatible with the morality, the civilization, and the well being of ^the people, and enacting that no person should lie allowed to sell such intoxicating liquors unJess he had a license from the State so to do. From.that time to the present, during three hundred years, die Legislature bad passed act after act, always making the same declaration - of the immorality and crime consequent upon the existence of tippliug-houses; but from first to last the whole tnree hundred years of legislation on this subject bad been a miserable f failure?(hear, hear, hear,)?and a Committee - of the House of Commons had just declared that the evil was as great now as it had been at any period" in this country. These facts led irresistibly to the conclusion, that all attempts to restrict the traffic had ended in entire failure; - and having failod in all their endeavors to 'regulate, ft was their duty to give a trial to thfe principle of prohibition." 'vOn the second evening Dr. Lovell, an eminent London physician^ was among the speaker*. From three-fourths of the inmates f these gaols he had learned that (hey bad J. become criminals through the drinking custbma of the age. Three-fourths of the pauperism, and tbree-fourths of the lunacy of the covntry were attributable to the same cause; and after fifty years' experience as a medical man, be was prepared to declare that four sixth* of tks disease of this country teas clearly traceable to the drinking habits of, the diseased themselves, or their parents? SorntwaroN of tub Suhday Tbaffic.?In Glaegow. Edinburgh, Dundee, and other towns of Scotland, a vigorous effort has been made to enforce the law against Sunday liqoor-shops and tippling. So far the result has been moat g!9tiiying> and ia seen in the diminution of drunkenness and rioting, and the increased de* eorum of the laboring classes. Tbe following extracts from the Scottish papers will be read j I with interest..: .Says the Scottish Guardian. (Glasgow): g | | f 4 .; " At the W&sterh police office there was not a single caso of drunkenness; at the Southern,'* not one: and also at the Clyde station there was -Dota- single-one; at the Calton only one, and that.the case of a fellow from,the coun| try, who had a bottle of .whisky in his pocket; nt the Central office there were only one or two. The last two Sabbaths have been kept with more outward decorum than has been observed to Glasgow for many years." 1 Says the Greenock Advertiser: "in Port-Glasgow, where the police have exercised a strict supervision, a great change for the better in the habits of the town has taken place. In localities where drunken brawls were so common that it-was almost dangerous i to pass through them, not a single intoxicated person is now to be seen." Says an Ayr paper: < "The new regulations with regard to public ' houses, are working admirably. We allude to the prohibition of the sale of spirits on Sunday. Not an intoxicated person was to be seen last Sabbath in our streets or suburbs." Says the Northern Warden, (Dundee): "Dundee had never quieter or externally better kept Sabbath than since the new Publio ' House Act came into operation. On Sabbath . last there was not a single committal at the police office, from four o'clock in the morning till the forenoon of Monday." We might multiply these extracts indefinitely, but o'ur narrow limits forbid. One of the most encouraging effects of the Sunday law, however, remains to be noticed. It is the inference which the Scotchmen very naturally draw from its operation ; that if prohibition of the traffio for one day in seven produces such ] excellent results, the thing must be good in itself, and its extension to the other six days of the week adapted to produce correspondingly 1 good results. Mb. Gotten.?The Bristol Temperance ner- { aid gives a report of Mr. Gough's labors in that city. He spoke twice to crowded audiences, and with his usual success. From, a private source we learn that brilliant offers have been made to Mr. G. to induce him to remain abroad three years longer, and that he will probably accept tbem. ? For other matters of interest we refer to the ^ following 5 Extracts from a letter addressed to Mr. Delevan, s by Thomas H. Barker, Esq., of the United Kingdom Alliance: u We have received a copy of the 'Address,' &c., of the General Committee of the World's Temperance Convention. It is a weighty and valuable document, and will be read with much interest and satisfaction by our intelligent and earnest friends. We are not in a position to give it a wide publicity at the present moment; but shall hope to do so ere long. "Your tract plan is most admirable, and if it can be well carried out, must tell powerfully | upon public sentiment in favor of your object. We are not yet able to undertake anything on ! a scale of magnitude, nor have we such favorable postal facilities as you have for the trans- i mission of documents. The Address you send us would cost 4d. postage in this country; and with you only one cent. To send the same to you would cost us a feo of four shillings. Sure- . ly the time will come when such anomalies and t international barriers against the spread of in 1 telligence will be swept away. " Our arrangement with the London Atlas newspaper will cease on the 1st of July ; but . you will see by nolices and advertisements in that and other papers, that we do not intend i to be unrepresented in the press. On the first a of July we float on the waters of publicity an organ of our own?The Alliance, a weekly penny journal, devoted to the advocacy of the j principle and* policy of a prohibitory liquor , law for old England, under the direction of the Executive Committee of the United Kingdom Alliance. ' Lees as our Editor, and are making arrange- f tnents with some able writers who will supply y original articles. We shall make good use'of American documents and correspondence; and hope you will instigate our transatlantic friends t to send us all the information they possibly can. We hope to have many letters from your practised pen. You shall hear frequently from ' some of our allies. " It will not be many months before we shall . have the satisfaction of reporting the prohibi 1 tion of the Sunday liquor traffic in England and Ireland. Our Scottish friends have already obtained that foretaste of the good things to come. Publio sentiment has wonderfully ripened to this standard since the commence 1 ment of our agitation fur a Maine law. And what perhaps is more cheering and significant, * our bishops and clergy generally, now see and ? deplore so great an anomaly and evil. W e are on the eve of a change to this extent?and shall soon have a Sunday Maine Law. We have good reason to anticipate that the Parliamentary Committee now sitting on Public House License, and which will soon bring its i inquiries to a close, will certainly report fa- * vorably as to the prohibition of the Sunday iquor traffic,?in accordauce with the weight ' of evidence they have received bearing in that direction, and the numerons petitions which are being poured into the House, praying most earnestly for such a boon."
