The death of Thomas Salmond has fallen with crushing force upon this community, although he had survived the period usually allotted to man, his erect and robust form, his sparkling face beaming with health and intelli- I gence, gave seeming assurance'to his friend" I of yet many years of usefulness and honor. For half a century he had been a citizen of this town, filling the various "ffieesuf Clerk of the Court, Ordinary, Commission-r in Equity, Intendant of the Town, and for thirty two years i President of the Branch of the Bank of the ! State at Camden, and being social in his tastes j and disposition, he had not only during all that time been intimatelv connected with all matters of generai interest to our c< mniunity, but bis individual associations were probably more extensive than those of any one who has ever lived among us. He was the connecting link between the early history of this portion of the State and the present and with his remarkable memory has perished forever many a delightful association with the past. We all feel that we have not only lost a venerable, honored, and most valuable citizen, but also a dearly prized friend. Therefore, Resolved lsf. That in the death of Thomas Salmond the State of S?>urh Carolina has lost a long tried, faithful and efficient officer and citizen, who for fifty years devoted no ordinu r\ zeal and talents to her servic.*. 2d. Resolved, That in the severance of the ties thai bound him and this community to gether, we not only recognise and mourn the death of the valuable officer and citizen, but also of the honorable and accomplished gentleman, the true and tried friend, and the de ngnttui companion. 3d. Resolved, That we tender to his bereaved family the assurace of our sincere and heartfelt condolence. \fter which, Col. J. B. It was then moved I v J. M. Dksvussurk. Esq., that a copy of them be sent to the fami ly of the deceased, with assurances of the heartfelt sympathy of this meeting in their sa<! bereavement. It was also moved by Mr. Z. J. DeIIay. that the proceedings of this meeting be published in the Camden Journal. Both of which motions having been seconded were, #n vote, unanimously adopted. ARRIVAL OF STEAMER AMERICA Halifax, July 5.?The steamer America 'has arrived here with Liverpool dates of June 24. She brings the important intelligence that the Turks unassisted by the allies, had defeat -ed the Russians, driving them across the Danaibe; and relieving the siege of Silistria. In consequence of this news, the English consul* advanced to 94 1-8?United States stocks were active, at an advance. MARKETS. Liverpool, June 24.?All grades of cotton ihave improved, the decline last noted having been fully recovered. Sales of the week GO,<000 bales, of which speculators took 7,000 arid exporters 8,000 bales. Breadstuffs had declined. Harve, June 21. The sales of cotton for the weck are 5,000 bales, at full rates. Dennis'.oun quotes the cotton market as hnv ing been favorably affected by the steamer's news. The improvement was chiefly in lower and middling grades, and amounted to 1 8d per lb., at which rate the demand was active, and prices at the close were tending upward. Rice was in moderate demand, at previous ratea. Sales of 300 tierces Carolina at 14s 6d a 19s 3d. * GENV.nAL INTELLIGENCE. The defeat of the Russians before Silistria wa? complete. Among the killed were three Generals. The Czar had ordered Paskiewitch to return from Jassey and capture Sili-tria at an\ cost. The death of Musa Pasha, the Turkish G ?vcrnor of Silistria, was confirmed. An attack by the allies upon Seha*t"p?>| was daily expected. Heavy guns had arrived for that perpose. The Greek insurrection had been entirely suppressed. The Russians had again sustained a severe defeat at the hands of the Circassians. ' The ship Trade Wind, bound from Mobile for Liverpool, was sunk by a collision off Cape Sable, and 24 persons drowned. Her captain was saved. The other vessel was also sunk. CONGRESSIONAL PROCEEDINGS. Washington, July 6, 1854.?Mr. Clayton's bill, designed to prevent the slave trade in American vessels, has passed the Senate. FRIGHTFUL RAILROAD ACCIDENT. Baltimore, July, 5, 1854.?A collision occurred yesterday on the Susquehanna Railroad between two trains, which resulted in the most lamentable loss oflife?not less than 24 per sons were instantly killed and 33 seriously in jured, many of whom must die. Arrival of the Baltic. The U. S. Mail steamship Baltic arrived ir New York on Saturday morning. The Liverpool Circular of Messrs. Browr & Shipley of the 27th ult. reports the sales o Cotton since the departure of the America a 25,000 bales, of which speculators'took 4,00( and exporters 2,000 bales, leaving 19,000 bales of all descriptions to the trade. The.demanc was fair and holders firm. Flour had declined Gd. Corn had also de clined Gd. It is reported that the Czar, in reply to the summons of Austria, has consented to evncuate the Principalities, and is already with drawing his forces from beyond the Truth. It is arranged that the Austrian troops shall occiipx the Principalities as the Russians leave The officiul reply of the Czar to the Austrian note will m?t be sent until the 2d inst. There is, however, little ih-ubt entertained of his disposition to yield. The report that the siege of Silistria had been raised is fully confirmed.
