On the 27th of July, we paid a visit of in.
'spection to the plantation of Rice Duiin, Esq.,
of Charleston^. 'lhis plantation is situated
nine miles east of Newberry C. H., and is now
under a systematic course of improvement,
which reflects great credit upon its iiberal proprietor
In August we gave a sketch of _
the true "farmer-planter"?we now have equal- >
ly as interesting and necessary a eluranter to
deal with in the "Merchant planter," who relies coi
011 rapidly increased and remunerating produc- ^
tion by the aid of a libera} application of Pet u- &c

we passed the plantations of Maj. R. 13. Jlol- sib
man and Col. John P. kinnrd, and upon their
chiirquepin lands, saw admirable results from
the application of guano to the cotton crop, <
and in a most luxuriant and prosperous condition.
These lands were once regarded indifferent
for planting purposes, hut with the processes
of culture resorted to by iheir present ij
proprietors, they now stand high in value,
when estimated by their productive capacity
Mr. Du!in's plantation was originally fine and
productive cotton land, abounding in decont
posed granite, and resting upon a good clay
subsofl. Its loamy top soil was consequently
well adapted, not only to the production of
cotton but small grains. It has, however,
been much exhausted by injudicious croppings
and, like most plantations in South Carolina,
the uplands are the -'"worse for wear." It is
upon these exhausted lands that he has experimented
on quite a large scale, by the application
ofguano and plaster of Pari--, both upon
corn and coiton. In order to make the exper- <
intents a fair test, he has left and marked rows
of cotton throughout the whole length of his
fields, to which there was nothing applied.?
The difference in these and the guanoed crop T

promising to yield not much more than 300 ?

plied was large, luxuriantly dark green, cover- ?
ed with bolls, and, with a favorable autumn,

plied, with the exception that the-former was ! '''
about two weeks nearer maturity, evidently I ^

periments with piaster, African guano, Kettle- I '
wells salts, and Common Salt, but that to I
which the two latter were applied exhibited ! gj,'
but little perceptible difference from the por i
lion on which no manure was used. Plaster,
however, he thinks about as good for cotton
as common stable or compost manures. '1 lit c>'
African guano was of no value whatever. , g
On the oat crop the most marked difference | to
was made manifest by the application of guano.
We saw in a very poor field, the soil of which !j.:i
wns completely exhausted, and nothing left i on
but a gladv substratum of pipe clay and mica,
a single bread;li upon whichgnuuo was applied,
and while the rest of the field showed from the
stubble that the crop was not worth gathering,
this portion attests the valued' this fertilizer by ' |(!|
its rank and thick stubble, which Mr. llopkins,
the efficient overseer,' told us grew as good i
oats as lie would desire to harvest. The gun- F
110 was applied to the cotton at the rate of 80
pounds to the acre, well mixed with 100 lbs. > r

We observed that a field of rich bottom land
had received its dose of guano? and though
this land was deep alluvial, and to the eves of
most planters, would require no manure tit all, >

els of corn per aere? still the spirited Merchant r|
J'iatiter determined to see the difference in the |
production made hy this applieation, on rich ' '
hs well as on exhausted lands. There was a | fn

corn, as well as in its luxuriance and general !n"
forwardness, over that which had received no ' Sl
guano. Whilst upon lowlands ive look great
pleasure in observing the very extensive oner

himself for a white man, for he is very white and has
been taking great care of bis skin for some time.

a dark colored pail* of pants; lie will be sure to change
his cap and clothes as soon as lie can, lie also wears
his hair in front straight down to hide the scar of the
blister. lie is a shoemaker by trade, though lie may
i not go at the business expecting that he will be so
advertised.
