method of a "stand up fight" is an excellent
substitute for the stiletto of the Italian, or the
cruel wooden shoes or sabre fights of the
French. One of the laws, perhaps it may be
I called the first law of boxing, is never to strike
an cneiny on the ground; and next to it, if
one knocked down does not come to in one
minute, or is forced out of the ring he is considered
beaten and the fight stops. This is a
humane provision, and perhaps the only redeeming
one, as it enables the conquered to
withdraw at pleasure from the blows of the
victor. Availing himself of this law, Sullivan,
after bruising his opponent severely, would go
Down before he could bring his greater strength
L> bear, and thus avoided at least as severe a
eating as he gave. By this method of figlitkg,
Sullivan succeeded in beating the head of
orrissey into a most horrible mass of bruised
Ksh and blood, and after thirty seven rounds
duced him to such a state that "his knees
fcook, his hands were low and his mind bcfcldered."
Once during the fight, the blood poured in
streams from the nostrils of Morissey,
his eyelids had to be lanced to prevent
theiV swelling up so as to blind him. On the
closve of the tenth round, "Morrissey presented
a picture that icas totally revolting,'1 whilst before
the eighth round of the fight even his seconds
had been covered with blood ! Towards
the last, when Morrissey was so badly hurt as
to be only capable of enduring what he could
not avoid, Sullivan kept, as he had done all
along, striking his adversary at pleasure, till
the desperate man would close upon him, when
fae would "drop" and thus get time to get his
breath and return to the attack.
Sullivan did not escape entirely, being much
bruised, and having one eye "shut up," and
suffering one blow "which made his side crack
like a whip."
The description of the fight terminates thus ;
" It was fortunate that the fight terminated at
the time that it did, otherwise we might probably
have had a repetition of the Lilly and
McCoy affair, judging from appearances, as
the blood streamed from Morissey's wounds,
and nearly choking him at every instant, had
to be taken from his throat with an instrument
in a co-ngulated state. '
For fifty-five minutes these two men heat
each other, and five thousand citizens of tiiis
"model republic" looked on approvingly, most
of them having, probably, within the preceding
ten nights, wept over the fancied sorrows ol
Uncle Tom, exulted in the escape of Eliza, or
cursed the brutality 01 the 1 anfcee Legree, ima
the stupid mismanagement of the Kentuckian
Shelby! It is fortunate for the credit of New
York, that Governor Seymour has taken this
matter in hand, and we hope he will treat it
by legal authority, as Southerners would have
done the monsters of Uncle Tom's Cabin, by
Lynch law at least, had such characters been
