"The want of means compels me to woik 1 f constantly ton disadvantage, and Icanrot enjoy the privileges and profits of my richer neiglibors." ! This is a difficulty in which many intelligent ' farmers ha\'c found themselves placed, an J from J which they Would most gladly be extricated.? 1 lumimefntile instances are occurring in their dai- j ly practice, where they conld secure golden re suits, had thev odly the loiter of a capital placed ' hrtheir hands; but as 'they are now situated, they seem Jo thcriisefves like the man who is diggingthe earth with his unassisted hands, or the one who is compelled to'carry water in an I egg-she'll, while their more fortunate neighbors 51 arerturning up the deep soil with the most per c ? feet instruments," or sending streams of refresh N metit aud fertility through easy channels over- x k " tbetr entire farms. . Now, we arc not about to * plan a "royal road"' of escape from this difficulty ; s | it must be met and conquered'. Ifthe attack is 1 lightly made, the eoftqiie>t will be comparatively,' ' H " easy; if wrongly, it will be the discouraging and ' formidable task of a life time: '} F The eager inquiry is new made, What is the ' easiest mode of conquest ? We aixwer, the tir>t ' aud great leading mOav.s/isa large fund of thor- 1 f ough aud practical knowledge. The man who. 1 by a close observation^of results in bis own prac- { tice and utthd experience 'of others, in counec- ./ tion w ith the immense amount of useful sngges- i r. tibhst-(t6"say nothing of distinct practical direc; tions) contained in the best publications of the ' day, possesses, even'with a very short purse, a ^ (vast advantage over the short-sighted, ignorant, 'and unobservant capitalist. He will turn toadvantage, even wkh his very limited means-a thousand resources whivh others would allow to f sleep unemployed forever. We once had occasion to observe the contrast I i in the condition of. two young farmers, one of whom had a four hundred acre farm ' left'* to lam; the other had but fifty acre", which he had paid for in part, by previously laboring on -a farm fur some years l>y the mouth in summer, J hnd teaching a district school in winter. The ( -one had the capital of inoiuy which his own 1 hands had never earned : the otlu-r j?o.?scs>ed the more valuable capital of knowledge and indomitable perseverenCe. The young Jk?ir was more r interested in riding about, in parlies, balls, and , y m jaunts to the city, than in tluvdctails of fa nil* * ing, and knew the contents of the ui-weekly. j>olitical newspaper, and of a certain frivolous mag- f azino, imir!i better lliairof any agricultural jour- ' Pal, or of Norton's Element;. IJ is farm became } an exact reflection of its owner's character.? Fences were soon .obscured by belts of alders, blackberries, and burdocks; and buildingssliow^ ed marks of premature age, and became dilapidated. llit-re was a -thirty acre inarsh, which : might have been drained, but it never was. And j there was a patch of Canada thistles which filed : one twelve acre field, and a part of another, j which he coukl have jlcsfroycd in one season, [ " had he known how others luid done. One lain died and eighty loads of niauure,"as climated , at one time by a neighbor, were allowed to lie a ' whole-.year ab nit his barn without application. Jlis cattle wore of :i -long-horned, big'JieatVd, r sharp I tacked breed. . Jlis swine were the lung 1 bristled racers. His profits in farming may be ' east I v guessed. There was a general-. complaint among his neighbors, that his debts were never ? met within six ufpnths after the appoint* <1 pay ? day, and that lie endured a sharp dun with ex- " * traordiiiary patience. It is true, necessity drove , jiim to retrench his expenses, and the improved examples about liiin induced him to amend hi.- i j practice, but not until his farm was reduced to ' ^ less than, half its origitud size, by portions solo ' k off at three different tin/bs to satisfy mortgages, j ^ Well, what beeohie of the voting fifty acre j'' farmer, we are asked. He lots ceased to be a j 0 "fifty acre farmer." He began by examining 1 si closely what improvements c mid bo made, of 'l whatever ciiaiaeli r and kind, whether cheap or expensive. Among these he was compelled to '' select the first the cheap iinprowincnts. or those j which promised the largest profits for the small- p est outlay. One of the first of these was the '* draining ?>f a three acre alder swamp, a large portion of which he did villi his own hands in . autumn, between se* ding and husking. II" had read of Judge UtuTs success with i!r,:!iia ; :i he construct* d ail the side or secondary ehaii- ' n*ds bv filling tin-in at the bottom with brushes | j1 cut from the ground, which .!* 1 l:im to nc- | complish t!i<; work at l-<s than half the usual | price. J hr-se biush drains have now stood many J s years, and the brush being wholly t'xclnd il front i 1 the external air, has not decayed, ami they car- j ^ ry oil the little water iv<ju:ri-d, 1>, ing niiniefieis. I ' and at regular intervals. X,,w, observe the re- ; t cult: The alder swamp would not hav.. sold i-I originally for five dollars an acre, it n >w bring- j !i crops of cotn, broom corn and meadow grass, [ ' more than paying the interest on a hundred ami fifty dollars per acre, b-sides all expenses. Ib-j doubled his manure by drawing from the m<>-t peatv portion of this drained swamp, large mi.ui 1 lilies of muck to his firm yard, where it \vn< he; t comparatively dry till wanted, under a cheap j slab ai d straw shed. The -am-! keen alien- ( tion to his b'i-in-s- in -glicr points, enabled hhu > o effect many additional improvements, among vliicli wo ui.iv briefly mention a cli<-ap ami simile horse-power of his own construction, cotfsistng of a lope running on the ends of radiating trin?, which enabled him by. lucau? of one or wo horses, as necessity required, to thrash his jrain, saw his wood, drive his churns, lorn his jriwl-stoue, and slit picket lath. It is true, lie las now thrown this rude machine aside for the rival ly imptov'ed endless chain power, Lut it inswored the purpose for the time, before the lays of iniprovyd* niacbin'ery. ]>ut among all lis outlays for the sake of economy, there is none ivhicll lib thinks has repaid him equal to flu; subscription money applied in taking two agrimltural periodicals, Costing- him a dollar and a lalf yearly besides postage, and which, in con-I lection with Ills own experience and good judj*npiii Jijivo b -I'D flie chief o-uidos in most of his jTCJit'improvements. BROWNING & LOAN, 1 Successors to C. & E. L. Kerrison & Co. Cor. King and Market-sts. Charleston, S. C. 1 Oct. 19 84" ' tf Edward llarriMMi'it Unequaled Flour and Grain Mills, j r plliS Grist Mill has never been equaled, either in 1 X its simplicity, portability, compactness, or beau- 1 tv of design. The frame work and easing are of cast iion, as also are the hoppers. A casting consisting of a triple-shaped base, with three columns resting Uopn it, constitutes the frame-work, which supports the casing. The casing is the cylindrical portion, or main body of the Mill, resting upon, and secured to the columns, and serves the purpose of inclosing and holding the stones hi their places. The casing is made ' in two equal parts, and each part is composed of a plate ami run. 1 lie edges 01 me rims are closely Tilted together and are secured by tlu ee lndts. The. fruiue and casing thus connected readily admits the advantage of three habit metal boxes (or the support of the spindle. One iu'tlie center of the base, and one iu the middle of either plate of the casing. This arrangement renders the parts peculiarly adapted to stand the pressure of grinding without yielding in the least degree, and therefore it is that these Slilis are known to grind the same quality of flour and meal, whether fed ui five or twenty-five bushels per hour. The spindle being secured lii inly and rigidly to the running stone, takes its hearings in the three boxe9 above named, mid sustains the weight .of the stone and the pressure of grinding, by resting upon a moveable step inserted in the center of the base. The hop. per, which holds two bushels of grain, is supported upon the top of the Mill, by three pillars which ure screwed into the upperpl: leof the casing. Tliegrnni is fed and regulated by atiordii ary sbr.e and a slide in 1 he h<?pper. The stones are driven bv a pulley of fifteen inehes diameter, and eight inches fare, w ich is placed upon the lower end of the spindle between the columns. The arms of the pulley are constructed in the form of spiral tying*, tor the purpose of driving a strong blast of air through apertures in the easing, in contact with the stones, to keep them cool One of these entire Mills, including the hopper, witii stones two feet and n-lialf in diameter, and <ac-h of them cut from a solid block of burr, weighing in all about 1,300 pounds, and warranted capable of grinding, in the best manner, twenty-five bushel* per hour of flour or meal, may be packed in a cask thirty-four by forty-two inches inside, ami tli s transported in safety to any part of the world. Farmers will find them adapted to be di iven by their horse powers. And although tl.ey are large enough to do the greatest amount of work, they will also grind two bushels pel* hour of fail* ineal with a one horse power, and more in the same proportion. The demand for a .Mill which can be driven by horsepow er, and grind grain to advantage, without getting out f order, has not heretofore been supplied; mills of peek measure dimensions do not seem to be big enough. The objection to this Mill, if any, is not that it does not iwr/r m/, nut nail iicosisiou iniieii, pertiaps; out others must decide about that, as there are enough cheaper ones. Tlicy have given satisfaction in all eases where they have heen tried, and are now used in place of common mill stones, in many of the 'nest c-tabli.-luiuuts throughout the country, with decided advantage, hoth in the power required and in the quantity and quality of the fluurand meal. The first premiums have always been a winded them, over all competition, at all the Fairs where they have been exhibited, viz: two (Johl Medal's from the American ln.-tiinte, in ami lS5u, -inJ a Silver Medal from the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanical Association, in I Sat); Diploma in 1851, from the Middlesex Mechanics' Association, and a Premium of ?10, from the New Vol I; State Fair.
