T \7OLFE'S gKLEBIUTEhSClHIiDAM AROMA1 t llU rfCili?AlTS?Deeming it tiuucqcssaf, to remind any regular member ol the Medical profession of the established medical properties of pure i.ollund Giu in many diseases of dropsical tendency, I respect fully invite your examination to a very superior article, manufactured by lnyself'cxcl naively, ot Schiedam, in iluAund, by a process peculiar to my o\vu factory. It is flavored and medicated, not by the common liarali berry, but by the ciioice botanical variety of the aroirtutic Italiuu Juniper 15eri*y, whose more vinous extract is distilled and rectified with its spirituous solvent, and thus becomes a concentrated tincture of exquisite flavor and aroma, altogether tianscciiddnt, in ! its cordial and medicinal properties, to any Holland | (tin heretofore knowl). Airnd the influx of inferior distillations with which the market is now flooded, physicians find no little iilihc-ulty in procuring ft good and pure O;i>, which they can prescribe with confidence in its beiietj.einl effects. As an importer of twenty year's standing, in the city of New Y irk, and possessing a matured expci ience in the manufacture of Holland Gin, especially 1 beg to submit to your attention my AUGMATJC SCHIEDAM SCHNAPPS, as one which cannot : fail to realize your utmost expectations, and 1 shall | be happy to forward you a little of it, free of charges, iu answer to a letter intimating your readiness to accept Hi. it is now scarcely one year since I have prepared and distributed my Schiedam Gin exclusively for medical purposes ; yet within thnt brief period, 1 have received numerous letters, both from physicians and patients, testifying to its really extraordinary efficacy in Gravel, Incipient Dropsy, and affect ions of the Kid^ neys and Bladder generally ; also in Dyspeptic Maladies, when taken in proper quantities as u Diet Drink, and especially at dinner, is found, by uniform experience, to be eminently efficacious in tbe most obsti nate cases, when even the best ol tbe usual remcdi- s ht.ve fuiled to afford more than temporary relief, and .I have no doubt that it would yield similar results with precision and certainty in your own professional experience. The Aromatic Schiedam Schnapps is put up in strong bottles, pints and quarts, neatly covered and labelled with my name embossed"on the bottle; also a fnc simile of my signature on the label, and my seal on the coik, with un essav upon its properties. UDULPIIU WOLFE, ? Im; orter, 22 Beaver street New York. Extracts from the New York Medical Gazette and .Journal of Health, edited by D. M. Itcese M. D? LLD.. 775 Broadway, October 1, 1852: Holland Giu as a Medicine. Iu our lust number, we accompanied the publication of a circular on this subject, from our fellow citizen, Udolpho Wolfe, lisq., willua brief commentary, expressive of our own views. Since then we have been employing this agent, and thus far with favorable results. But we are in the receipt of several communications on the subject from medical men, which serve to show that Mr, Wolfe's Aromatic Schiedam Schnapps is very extensively in use, and in the hands of physicians, is proving itself as a stimulating ciuretie, to be eminently successful, after other medica tion with this intent had oeen tried in vain. In one of the cases thus reported, obdominal dropsy has been entirely removed by the passage of a calculous ol considerable size which is ascribed to the use of only two bottles of this article. We know not the object of Mr, Wolfe in designating his preparation by the singularly uneuphoneous name of " Schnopp*" nor of his denominating it in his advertisements the '.' concentrated Tincture of Juniper," instead of perpetuating its ancient tide of Holla ud Gin. It is true that he admits it to be nothing else than the latter article in its pure state, unadulterated by noxious drogs; and hence he' .contradistinguishes it from the Gin of commerce, nearly all ol which, as is well known, is manufactured here and elsewhere from inferior \.liiskey and refuse drugs. The name he has given, it, however, may serve the purpose of designating his aitide oaprepaied exclusively for medical purposes, and thus commend it to physicians, for whose convenience it is on fale only by reputable druggists and apothecaries. As respects its medicinal and curative effects, we understand him to eluim only that it is a pnreand reliable article of Holland Gin, and as such, worthy ol the confidene of Physicians, to those diseases for which they are strained by finding it imprnetible lo obtain the arti lc in a pure state. Nor should any prejudice against alcoholic medicine deprive the afflicted .1.. i.. c? ,.t i,. im. Ul LUC U'.'llVJlt Ul 11119 III VIC.r* li iv.il IIVIII UKIV 1IUmemorial lies hcKl its place among the remedial agencies of the Materia Medico, if it be found worthy ol confidence by continued experience. , At all events, those who persist in the employment and toleration of other alcoholic medicines, as tinctures, bitters, ?tc., nud especially those who prescribe Gin under any eircumstnuees, must all unite in giving t ie preference to a pure article over the manifold adulterations so rife in the market. Mr. Wolfe liberal iy supplies physicians with a sample bottle for analysis and trial, as set forth in his circular, and stakes the reputation of the remedy upon the innocence, safety and efficiency of liis Holland Gin, when used under medical advice, arid pledges his own character j in bn.?iness that the article will not disappoint any whq use it. . >. From the New York Express, October 2*, 1852. IUcdictii Liquor*. In common, I presume, with many oth- rs of the profession, 1 received, sonic few mouths since, a circular addressed ''To Physicians throughout the United States," by Mr. Udolpho Wolfe, the importer of Ben! ver street, inviting a medical and chemical examination of a new article of Holland Gin, manufactured by himself, at Schiedam, in Holland, by a peculiar process, and put up for medical use, under the somewhat Dutch title of "Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps." The circular claims for thin article an eminently superior degree of purity, aroma, flavor, and medicinal efficacy : and offers, moreover, a gratuitous supply of it to any physician who may feel disposed to test these claims in a scientific and professional manner. Being familiar with three facts ii relation to the use of Holland Gin, asa medicine, namely: first, that when pure, it absolutely invaluable and not to be exchanged for n?v other remedy known to the profession, in many complaints, both acute and chronic; ; secondly, that amid the multitude of ill-made_ or adulterated liquors with which this country abounds, a j pure Holland Gin is scarcely to be obtained at any price; and thirdly, that the radical impurities of any I in'erior or spurious Gin consist, first, of the hydra'ed 1 1.. ..C n ..iSdiwimid /?il i?H mntvk /lomnmiilv ' kiiiiwii as Potato Spirit, Fotisel Oil, or Aniilic Alcohol; ami secondly, of the heavier of the two essential oils ' of Juniper, instead of the lighter?which impurities I usually result from the mercenary system of an excessive di-tillalion of the materials employed?1 re solved to accept of Mr. Udolpho Wolfe's challenge, j and put his "Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps" to the test ol rigid analysis. And I was induced to do this (not withstanding the proprietor's long standing and reputed respectability as nil importer) because the purity of (jilt, above that of every other spirituous liquor employed in medical practice, is of the most vital consequence to the community, inasmuch as it is subject to two distinct causes of pernicious impurity, namely ; the inferior oil of Juniper, as well as the Fousel oil; 1 found moreover, the " Aromatic Schnapps" strongly recommended by a physician and writer of no less iiilluenee than I). M. Ileese. til the Ne x \ ork .Medical Gazette, and bv many of the most eminent members of the profession, who 1 had no reason to suppose had obtained any other tha.ii empiracal evidence of its pharnircciitical purity and value. 1 therefore resolved to inform medical men at least, for the sake of the public at large, of the result*of my investigation; whether tltey proved favorable or otherwise to the character of tharticlc ami In the interest of the proprietor* Those results are as follows: Searching first for the nil of Juui|tcr bv distillation, 1 obtained an oil. from two quarts of the liquid, wliooe specific gravity was t),S32 and whose boiling point was 313 degrees, nor did successive rc-distillation vield an nil of greater gravi'y, or of any other kind whatever. The same quantity of common Holland Gin. so railed, yielded an exressi?e amount, by re-distilhilioii. of nil weighing U.S?I with the boiling point 12 degrees ; Hie ligltler oil having previously passed over. This was conclusive as to the super ority .if Mr. Wolfe's Gin in relation to the oil of Juniper, upon which the aroma. flavor, and diuretic and oth-r me licinal properties of avery kind of Gin essentially depend. As to the Funnel oil. with which nil inferior spirituous liquors are more or less impregnated, and which rentiers litem poisonous in the exact ratio in which they are im bibed?which causes such liquors to intoxicate whett oth1 crs do n f, and creates tlmt morbid, insatiable appeti'e for iimIiic indulgence, with all its deplorable coiiseqitcncos, of which the friends of'temperance ami philanthropy *0 | justly rontplnin. instead of that satiety nnil fastidiousness of taste. for which the ilrinkers of pure liquors are ilisj tineuislied?of this fetid, acrid usthmaliral Fousel oil, | found no trace in Mr. Wolfe's medicinal (?in. although 1 repeavdly tested \nriotts (|il:intilies of it ?ith the chloride of calcium, by the usual process, which so readily detects and obtains it in the ordinary spirituous liquors. ;\cenrdilMly.
