UDOLPIIU WOLFE, Inr orter, 22 Beaver street New York. Extracts from the New York Medical Gazette and Journul of Health, edited by D. RI. Reese M. D? LL1).. 775 Broadway, October 1. 1852: Holland Gin as a Medicine. In our hst number, we accompanied the publication f a circular on this subject, from our fellow citizen, Jdolpho Wolfe, Esq., with a brief commentary, excessive of our own views. Since tlien we have been mploying this agent, and thus far with favorable reults. But we are in the receipt of several commitlications on the subject from medical men, which erve to show that Mr. Wolfe's Aromatic Schiedam ichnnpps is very extensively in use, and in the hands if physicians, is proving itself, as a stimulating ciuotic, to be eminently successful, after other mediea ion with this intent had teen tried in rain. In one if the eases thus reported, abdominal dropsy has been entirely removed by the passage of a calculous of considerable size which is ascribed to the use of only wo bottles of this article. We know not the object of Mr. Wolfe in designaing his preparation by the singularly uneuphoneous inme of "Schnapps," nor of his denominating it in lis advertisements the "concentrated Tincture of Juliper," instead of perpetuating its ancient title of lloland Gin. It is true that he admits it to be nothing else than the latter article in its pure state, unadulerut'-d by noxious drugs; and hence be-cuntradisinguishes it from the Gin of commerce, nearly all of rliieh, as is well known, is manufactured here and lsew here from inferior v hiskey and refuse drugs, ["lie name lie has given it, however, may serve the lurpose of designating his at tide as prepared exeluively for medical purposes, and thus commend it to lhysicinns, for whose convenience it is on sale only >y reputable druggists and apothecaries. As respects its medicinal and curative effects, we inderstund him to claim only that it is a pure and reiable article of Holland Gin, and us such, worthy of he confidenc of Physicians, to those diseases for which hey are strained by finding it impmctible to obtain he nrti le in a pure state. Nor should any prejn* lice against alcoholic medicine deprive the afflicted if the'benefit of this article, which from time imncniorinl has held its place among the remedial ngeniesof the Materia Mediea, if it be found worthy of confidence by continued experience. At all events, those who persist in the employment ml toleration of o liter alcoholic medicines, as tineures, hitters, Ac., and especially those who prescribe in under any circumstances, must all unite in giving ie preference to a pure article over the manifold .dulterntions so rife in the market. Mr. Wolfe libeally supplies physicians with a sample bottle for anlvsis and t rial* as set forth in his circular, and stakes he reputation of the remedy upon the innocence, sifety ?n?i efficiency of his Holland Gin, when used inder medical advice, and pledges his own character n business that the article will not disappoint any irho use it. From the New York Fx press, October 2", 1852. 3Iedio:al E.iquois. In common, 1 presume, with many others of the ir< .fess ion, I received, some few months since, a circuit* addressed "To Physicians throughout the United itates," by Mr. Udolpho Wolfe, the importer of Better street, inviting a medical and chemical cxaminaion of a new article of Holland Gin, manufactured y ' inisclf, at Schiedam, in Holland, by a peculiar iroccss, and put up for medical use, under thu somerhat Hutch title of "Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps." "lie circular claims for this article an eminently suicrior degree of purity, aroma, flavor, and medicinal tlicacy : and otti-rs, moreover, a gratuitous supply of : to any physician who may feci disposed to test these (aims in a scientific and professional manner. Being familiar with three facts i i relation to the so of Holland Gin, as a medicine, name]}': first, that rlien pure, it absolutely invaluable and not to be xchuugcd for n..y other remedy known to the proL-ssion, in many complaints, both acute and chronic; eeoiidly, that amid the multitude of ill-made oradult-rated liiptors with which this country abounds, n urc Holland Gin is scarcely to be obtained at any rice; and thirdly, that the radical impurities of any iferior or spurious (tin consist, first, of the hydra'cd xidc of Amy), a poisonous oil, or more commonly liown as Potato Spirit, l'Yniscl Oil. or Amilic Alcohol; nd secondly, of the heavier of the two essential oils f Juniper, instead of the lighter?which impurities sually result from the mercenary system of an exsssive distillation of the materials employed?1 re ;?lved to accept of Mr. Udolpho Wolfe's challenge, nd put his "Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps" to the st ot rigid analysis. And I was induced to do this notwithstanding the proprietor's long s'anding and puted respectability as an importer) because the purity f Gin. above thai of every other spiriliuuis liipioremployI in medical praeliee, is of the most vital consequence in is c immmiity. inasmuch as it is subject to two distinct iin-es of pernicious impurity. namely ; the inferior oil of nniper. as well as the r ousel oil; 1 found moreover, the A .ipiuintv bv a nliVsi ian ami writer of no less iiilhtciicc liian 1). 31.
