Tlie Management of orchards is a matter of | , no trivial importance to"this country at the pre- tjie aenttime. Thousands of acres of the best land ^en ate planted 'with fruit trees, anda large amount ?nij of capital lias been expended in their purchase suj. ' and .planting and whether this laud has been R " - rightly appropriated, an J this money judiciously expended, depends entirely upon future manage- j,0T) ment. .Many-people have embarked in this, as j in other, pursuits, with spirit and enthusiasm. su^ Thfiyprepare their ground, plant their trees, ry j take good care of them probably for a year or 0llt ,two until their enthusiasm begins to coo), when some new hobby is taken up, and the orchard is wj)( lost sight of, probably M seeded down," and left 0pt tp take care of itself with tho occasional assis- con tan^e of cattle, sheep, pr hogs, that way be turn- an,] ed in to pasture anion g them. Thus " seeded or t ^ down," and cropped; and bruised, and barked by ^ ?*, aiiiffialSj Stan'ed for the want of suitable andsuf'' ficient nutriment, the trees become stunted, mos- ^its r * sv, covered with insects and, in short,a nuisance, ^ " This is the actual history of many an orchard j we know of this day, and thousands and tens t0 < of thousands of dollars have been lost to hard- t0 < working, economical farmers; and to the country, mo. . it.;,, . /.? if we mnv so call it. Gar ?v?j ; - - -- v. dens arc man%cd not unfrequeutly in the same rsr ' way. A great many impulsive sort of people rush into fruit culture and gardening this season with all the Enthusiasm of devotees?one ^ would suppose, to hear them talk, that garden- ;yir ing would occupy their attention largely to the Stot end of their lives, but next season we will find Coli them with not a thought of gardening, all the 11 improvements and expenditures of last year neg- tQlcfi looted and lost. Need we caution people against j] such folly ? We fear we need, and yet every esta year we can see a greater degree of prudence ern. manifested in the matter?plans better matured and having more the appearance of reality and c c permanence. These spasmodic efforts will grad- at a ually disappear as people become better inform- I! ed and.enter upon improvgmqj^s with more corrcct views and prospects. But to rejurn to orchards, to which we pro- ? pose to confine our present remarks. We must beg of cultivators not to entertain for a single moment the ruinous practice of "seeding down." * If you think you cannot affuid it, or that it will ^ not pay to give your orchards good clean culture until they halve at least attained a full bear- ten* ing condition, dig them up and burn them, and sub convert your lands at once and completely into T corn fields or pastures, as it may seem fit. You *jf"0 may rely upon it, that you cannot have a more maj unprofitable or discreditable piece of property A than a starved, neglected fruit tree. How is it ? possible that a young tree can thrive in a pasture or tough sod ? The young roots n-nr the T-] surface of the ground that are really the most or j important as furnishing the better portion of the nisti food of the tree, are rubbed by the grass and tot weeds, and die out, leaving the tree to find its . c entire support through the deep roots that are lie? bedded in the poor cold subsoil. In such a sit- ^ uation, a tree immediately loses its vigor. It ? 1 U-~.l f?n?; r? begins to iook reeoic, um aim , , insects take possession of it and there it ends. 1. It is surprising to people who have Dot observed very closely the results of various modes of " ^ culture upon trees, how son it younjf trees show ? :r' . . I or ueir UlOJa, ' ' | young apply trie . The row, vac ? J 2 feci [ irt, and we sowed only one row of carrots iu space?the ground, too, was kept clean all rnner, and vet we lost the season's growth of trees, and got a poor crop of carrots. Other 2S of the same age, in the same soil, icilhovt rots, were twice as large in the autumn.? at ended our carrot culture among trees.?. ien an orchard is cropped, the greatest care >uld be taken to give the tree ample room, he nutriment be drained from around the ts by the rapid growth of annual crops, or if tops be excluded from the free circulation of ajr and exposed to the sun, the result will a feeble, sickly growth. \ multitude of planters do not seem tonpprete the value of a tree. We know men who ;e fine field crops, who would, indeed,* be amed of a poor one, and who would no more cr.c.n vtVliilrr },ftliind ft Iftftl). IfllKr-liftj|*(>(l fi|t,]|V tfVV" * O --- - --- T J so, than, they would be caught picking pockand yet their trees are as disgraceful to tliem die leanest horse would bo. A tree is a livbody, requiring food and care as much as an inal, and qven more, for it has not the ad'vane of locoiribtion. It is confined to a narrow t, and if its food i^hot found there, it cannot i it elsewhere, and it must perish. "We have land a very sensible communication touching ( subject, which we append to these remarks, 1 we beg the special attention of tree plantto its contents: "Vrmit me to say a few words upon a subject elation to which farmers, in general, seem to iither strangely careless, or wilfully ignorant blind. I allude to the very common pracof " seeding doton" orchards to clover. Jy attention was "first called to this subject an experienced farmer and orchardist, some nty ye^rs since, while examining the defects ny own orchard, on a farm then recently pursed in Genesee county. The orchard, though ng and grafted, was at the time exhibiting ug'symptoms of decay. The trees had been t out" some eight or ten years previously, on rong loamy soil?had been manured some or three times from the barn-yard, and by process of grafting after setting, had been * it nn.i IV WV1I llimilK'U, JCL UIC UUIJIVO UI1VA Ultimo he trees had nearly all become very rough scabby, and nearly encased in a covering of e licethe leaves were small and yellow, constantly falling during all the summer, .there were scarcely apples enough even at ; time grown, to furnish a sample to each ; and all that were grown, were much under , knotty and scabby, and quite deficient in jr. )n inquiring the cause, I was told by my ul, that beyond a doubt, all these defects been the result of "seeding" the orchard n to clover, which had been done l?v my pressor some few years previous; the roots of clover plants striking deep into the earth, ing deprived the trees of that nutriment ch they required to promote a healthy and >rous growth. ^ . he " remedy" prescribed was, to plow the' jnd thoroughly, though not deep, manure and the soil constantly, and under the tops and ading branches to throw a liberal dressing y year or two of leached ashes, lime and >s or dooryard manure?then scraping and iring the trunks and branches as fir as pracble, and washing with a strong ley of wood ?s, and theu adding a good coat of whitewash iposed of lime and wood ashes, laid on either 1 brusli or broom, or by any other convenient hod. 'his process then, and subsequently practised nany other cases urd r my own personal diion and observation, produced a result cntireatisfactory and highly gratifying?restoring trees to a healthy, vigorous growth, full, and ernliv to uniform bearing of nerf-et fruit: J " * C? " / my most sanguine desires in relation to this ject, will have been fully gratified if those, or irtion only, possessing fruit orchards, will but tliis thcry to a practical test by but one well ducted experiment. )id time and space permit, while upon this jt-ct, I would gladly call the attention of evenan possessing energy and enterprise to set a single fruit tree, to the importance of a rul use of lime as a manure or stimulant, m applied directly to the foots of most kinds lie apple, (near, though not in immediate tact with the body?-say two feet distant) well worked into the soil, either .by the hoe light plowing, thereby producing not only laraud much more pei feet fruit, but in many ances, (contrary to the apparently natural ha of the variety,) inducing uniform annual ting. V renewal of the dressing of lime once in four six years, and from four to eight quarts of lime ?nch tree, will probably be found sufficient in <t cases, especially on light and warm *oils.
