Fight with a Crocodile.?We need
scarcely tell our readers that the most
dreaded inhabitant of the water is the
crocodile. Any person in proximity to
the water is in danger of attack. L lie
stoops to fill a dipper the bubbling sound
is sure to draw half a dozen crocodiles
at once to him. To escape the danger

handle six feet in length, is generally
employed, and even this is frequently
snatched from the hand ot the water
earner.
But, in spite of the well-known and
terrible characteristics of this dreadful
king of the water, there arc plenty of
men who do not hesitate to meet and (
encounter him in his own element. Those (
engaging in it are well aware of the contest,
in which one of the combatants at
ifflst must die. It is imnossible for both
t'> escape, or for a "drawu battle '' to
take place. The crocodile never, yields
the contest so long as he has the ability
to struggle, and the moment his human j
enemy turns his back to flee, that mo-;
mentis his last.
About twenty years since the writer of j
tliis was making a journey in the north- i
era part of South America, in company j
with a Llanero, or inhabitant of the plain.
When a dozen miles from our destination. |
word reached us that the wife of our
comrade lay at the point of death, and
he was urged to make all possible haste. :
We at once struck our wearied horses to a i
rapid gallop, and a half hour later reached ;
the banks of a stream of large size, which ;
it was necessary to cross. Unfortunately,
the ferryman was at a considerable (lis-1
tanoe with his canoe, and the Llanero j
became impatient. i
"I will not wait for him."he said at '
last: ' he is an age in reaching us, while j
my poor wife is dying. I will swim
across."
" Remember the danger," said I. '* from I
the crocodiles."
lie did not reply, but removed hi*
heavy equipments. I promised to take j
them with me, and lie then loosed the i
saddle of his horse, so that it merely float- j
ed behind him. Having prepared his
animal for the water, he now put himself j
in the proper condition. This consisted
in stripping himself entirely to the waist,
after which he placed his dagger between j
his teeth, and plunged into the river. I
Ilis faithful beast instantly followed, and ;
the two swam together, the Llanero keep- 1
ing slightly in advance, so that his horse j
should run no danger from the monsters. 1
The crocodile knows lull well which is
the dautiost morsel, and at such times in- j
variably makes torthcinau, attacking the

horse onlv wheii 110 omer prey is oucn-u.
The Llanero certainly was not more
than one-fourth the distance across the I
river when we botty saw the monster j
come to the surface, near the centre, and
make at once towards the approaching i
man and beast.
The Llanero caught bight of the crocodile
at the same moment that we did, and
with his dagger still between his teeth,
he made at once towards him. As the
two combatants swiftly approached, we j
watched them with painful and breathless
interest. The mau, fully aware that he
could slay the monster only by stabbing
him beneath the armpit, and knowing, j
too. that this could not be accomplished ,
unless he made him spring out of the wa- i
ter, exerted his cunning to compel the ;
crocodile to do this.
We saw the Llanero, when a few yards
distant from his foe, reach his k'ft ha?*l
buckward, and place it upon The saddle, !
at the same time taking his dagger in his 1
right hand; when six feet or so distant, !
and on the very point of attacking him.

that it bid fair to full directly upon the
head of the assailant. Supposing it to be
some coveted morsel, the crocodile made
n leap fair out of the water, and caught
it in his extended jaws. This was the j
critical moment; quick as lightning the
Llanero plunged his dagger to the hilt in
t he monster's vitals. A spasmodic grunt,
a loud splash, a few struggles, and the
crocodile sank to the Ixittora of the river, j
never to raise again.
Filled with admiratiou at this achieve
meet, the ferryman insisted upon the
Llanero entering his canoc. and staying
to dinner with him; but the brave fellow
refused all assistance, and upon reaching
the-opposite fiid?, mouu.tcd his horse ami
