It is related of Mr. Beecher, that ho
once so fascinated a young man by his
patriotic appeals, that the ill-starred
youth enlisted, went to the war and was
killed. Then Mr. Beecher visited the
deceased's mother, declared ho was the
assassin of her boy, and went on so that,
instead of his comforting her, she had to
"turn in" and comfort him. There was
also another young man upon whom a
distinguished clergyman nod such an
influence, that he grew discontended
with his home, went West, and was hung
for stealing a mule. Then the distin?
guished clergyman sought out this young
man's mother for the purpose of binding
up her wounded heart; but as soon as he
crossed her threshold, ihe seized him,
threw him down and mopped him
around the floor until thero was scarcely
any breath left in his body. Such is the
difference in women.
Mr. Schroeder, of Baltimore, has per?
fected a machine by which, he says, he
will perform the journey from New York
to London in fifty hours. He proposes
to carry the mails and fourteen passengers,
