The Two Villages.
Over the river, on the hill,
Lieth a village white and still,
And all around the forest trees
Shiver and whisper in the breeze.
Over it sailing shadows go
Of soaring hawk and screaming crow,
And mountain grasses low and sweet,
Grow in the middle of every street.
Over the river.'nndcr the hill,
Another village lieth still.
There I Bee in a cloudy night
Twinkling stars of household light,
Fires that gleam from the smithy's door.
Mists that curl on tho river shore,
And in the roads no grasses grow,
For the wheels that hasten to and fro. 9
In that village, on the hill,
Never a sound of smithy or mill;
The houses are thatched with grass and
flowers,
Never a clock to toll the hours.
The marble doors are always shut,
You cannot enter hall or hut,
All the villagers lie asleep,
Never again to sow or reap,
Never in dreams to moan or sigh,
Silent and idle and low they lie.
In that village, under the hill,
When the night is starry and still,
Many a weary soul in prayer,
Looks to that other village there,
And weeping and sighing longs to go,
Up to that home from this below;
Longs to sleep by the forest wild,
Whither have vanished wife and child,
And heareth, praying, this answer fall,
"Patience, that village shall hold ye all."
Dufaure, Minister of Justice for the
French republic, has published his nice
new law for the extinction of iournalism
in that country. This press law might
gratify Zaoh Chandler, hut it is evidently
not exactly the thing for a free republic.
A newspaper editor who attacks the form
or prinoibTe of a republican government,
or the authority and acts of the president,
will be imprisoned threo years and fined
5,000 francs. Anybody who petitions for
a modification of the constitutional laws
will be imprisoned. Another clause gives
the ministry power to prohibit tho sale of
a periodical in the streets. Other equal?
ly oppressive clauses are incorporated in
the law, rendering the press entirely use?
less as an expression of views, political
or otherwise. Suoh a law is enough to
make Chandler and some other Ameri?
can philosophers deliberately naturalize
as French citizens.
At a party, recently, a sentimental
young lady strolled with a gentleman, on
whom she had her eye, into the conserv-1
atory. Looking up pensively into his I
face, she said, with tears in her voice,
"Ah, no one loves me, Mr. Barnes!"
"Some one does!" "Yes?" said the lady,
dropping her head and preasing his arm I

regular session of 1874-75, and approved
on March 21, 1875, SEALED PRO?
POSALS for a supply of 108 tons of
COAL, for the use of the several Depart?
ments of tho Government, and for the
Houses of Senate and Representatives,
will be received at this office until flu*
28th of July next, as follows:

tives.
The party or parties to whom a con?
tract may be awarded shall, before en?
tering on tho performance therrof, give
a bond, with sufficient security, on such

their failure to do so, within thirty days
after it has been awarded and approved,
